{"id":58728,"date":"2021-09-01T09:54:18","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T13:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=58728"},"modified":"2021-09-01T09:54:18","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T13:54:18","slug":"election-2021-everything-hinges-on-climate-change-says-wegg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/election-2021-everything-hinges-on-climate-change-says-wegg\/","title":{"rendered":"Election 2021: Everything hinges on climate change, says Wegg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">While she does not like to be identified as a one issue candidate, Jessica Wegg, the Green Party candidate for North Island \u2014 Powell River, says global warming has become the most important issue of our time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt touches every aspect of our lives, every other aspect of society in general. We cannot talk about anything else until we talk about the climate, and unless we talk about the climate,\u201d says Wegg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This summer\u2019s heat dome in British Columbia was unprecedented. Businesses were forced to close and <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/life-events\/death\/coroners-service\/news-and-updates\/heat-related\">hundreds died<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMy sons school: they made the attendance optional because the heat was so bad and so dangerous. And they didn\u2019t even do that the whole year for COVID, at his school,\u201d said Wegg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The pace and number of extreme weather events appears to be increasing globally. Photo courtesy of Jessica Wegg.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">On a personal level, Wegg does not eat meat, she composts and recycles, she turns off the lights when she leaves a room and she's conscious of how much water she uses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBut those aren\u2019t enough. We need to really tackle this at the deeper levels. We\u2019ve got industries that are just wrecking the planet and they are not being held accountable. We need to tell them to stop,\u201d said Wegg. \u201cObviously, I am talking about the oil and gas industry. We need to leave it in the ground, that\u2019s the bottom line. Enough is enough. We know that we have greener technologies. We have jobs in them.
