{"id":58466,"date":"2021-08-27T18:53:12","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T22:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=58466"},"modified":"2021-10-05T23:51:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-06T03:51:10","slug":"treaty-6-flag-ceremony-at-edmonton-city-hall-for-treaty-6-recognition-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/treaty-6-flag-ceremony-at-edmonton-city-hall-for-treaty-6-recognition-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Treaty 6 flag ceremony at Edmonton City Hall for Treaty 6 Recognition Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"news-abstract\">The City of Edmonton and the Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations renew commitment towards reconciliation as Treaty 6 flag ceremony took place at the City Hall this morning.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Edmonton City Hall celebrated Treaty 6 Recognition Day today, an annual event commemorating the signing of Treaty 6 and acknowledging the ongoing relationship between the city and the Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">A flag raising ceremony took place at 8:15 a.m. The Treaty 6 flag now flies proudly at City Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mayor Don Iveson said this recommitment of the\u00a0relationship will strengthen ties between the Treaty 6 First Nations and the City of Edmonton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rick Wilson, minister of Indigenous Relations, attended on behalf of the government of Alberta. He says he is always excited to take part in days where\u00a0all communities come together in the spirit of reconciliation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhat\u2019s really important for the everyday Albertan is to realize that we do have treaty agreements with our First Nation people and to bring that recognition forward\u00a0so it\u2019s a better understanding between both communities that we can work together in the spirit of mutual friendship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mayor Iveson presented this year\u2019s proclamation to Grand Chief Okimaw Vernon Watchmaker and did a gift exchange at the end of the ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The first Treaty 6 Recognition Day was in 2012.
