{"id":58139,"date":"2021-08-26T06:09:21","date_gmt":"2021-08-26T10:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=58139"},"modified":"2021-08-26T13:26:46","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T17:26:46","slug":"newest-island-class-bc-ferries-receive-indigenous-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/newest-island-class-bc-ferries-receive-indigenous-names\/","title":{"rendered":"Newest Island Class BC Ferries receive Indigenous names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a special naming ceremony in Victoria\u2019s harbour, the third and fourth Island Class ferries destined for the Campbell River <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Quadra Island route were officially designated as \"<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Island Nagalis\" and \"Island K\u2019ulut\u2019a.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The naming ceremony took place on Monday at the full-service shipyard Point Hope Maritime. The names were carefully chosen through a community engagement process and \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">celebrate the important connection to some of the coastal communities the ferries will serve,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcferries.com\/news-releases\/bc-ferries-announces-names-newest-island-class-ferries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BC Ferries stated in a press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nagalis translates as \u201cdawn on the land\u201d and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">K\u2019ulut\u2019a is the name for porpoise in two of the Kwakwaka\u2019wakw dialects, Kwak\u0313wala and Lik\u0313wala.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a partnership between BC Ferries and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fpcc.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Peoples' Cultural Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (FPCC), Indigenous artists will be invited to participate in an open call for submissions of art for the interior of the vessels, with more details released in the fall. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The BC Ferries' press release states that the art will \u201crecognize Indigenous peoples as stewards and original mariners of B.C.\u2019s coastal waterways.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58145\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Island-Kuluta-sponsors.jpeg\" data-dt-img-description=\"Island K\u2019ulut\u2019a sponsors: BC Ferries\u2019 Crewing Advisor Jennifer Thacker and June Johnson from We Wai Kai Nation. The four women sponsors at the ceremony were an employee to represent BC Ferries paired with an Indigenous elder to represent the community, for each vessel.
