Not at very high levels, but the discussion wasn\u2019t promising\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Higham referred to a letter that was sent to some Saltwire subscribers recently, which made no clear commitment with regard to reviving suspended publications.<\/p>\n<p>The letter said the company was \u201ccautious but optimistic\u201d and that it plans to \u201cpartner\u201d with communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Click to listen:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-5617-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/July-16-Higham-2.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/July-16-Higham-2.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/July-16-Higham-2.mp3<\/a><\/audio><\/figure>\n<p><em>\u201cSo some of the details of Saltwire\u2019s suggestion was that they would need a minimum of 5000 subscriptions and a significant commitment to advertising from local businesses in order for that to take place. That\u2019s a pretty high threshold for this area. I did talk a little bit with Amherst News about what their situation was, was it an opportunity for a joint paper of some type under those kind of terms? It\u2019s a challenge. And there\u2019s going to have to be a lot of work if somebody wants to pursue this, and I just wanted the public to know that if it\u2019s something someone wishes to spend some time on and build that type of an opportunity, let me know and we\u2019ll arrange a chat with the partners that be and I can give more detail about some of the things that I have heard in that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Saltwire announced a twelve-week shutdown of the Tribune-Post and other weeklies on March 24th, nearly four months ago.<\/p>\n<p>The last story by local Tribune-Post journalist Katie Tower was also published on March 24th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his report at Monday\u2019s council meeting, Mayor John Higham gave an update on the future of Sackville\u2019s weekly paper, The Tribune-Post.
