The paramount Chief of the The Kwakwa\u0331ka\u0331\u02bcwakw, Dave Mungo Knox, is conducting, in the precense of many other herediatry Chiefs and Matriarchs, a copper braking ceremony to shame the provincial government. We have of course, invited Premier John Horgan to witness. He is not likely to attend, but the courtesy has definitely been extended to him. This has happened once before at the legislature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Other well known personalities speakinging:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Marlene Hale (Wet\u2019suwe\u2019ten)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Tli\u2019amin urban Indigenous activist Grandma Losah Rose Henry<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">\u00a0Union of BC Indian Chief\u2019s Vice President Chief Don Tom (Tsartlip)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">\u00a0Forest ecologist, UBC Professor and author, Dr. Suzanne Simard is a featured speaker<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Green\u00a0<\/span>MP Elizabeth May will introduce Indigenous youth land defenders and frontline forest protectors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Arbess noted that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ancientforestalliance.org\/this-first-nation-just-banned-industrial-logging-and-mining-from-vancouver-island-territory\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Ahousaht Firest Nation have banned all industrial logging in their territoty<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">The Kwakwa\u0331ka\u0331\u02bcwakw have called for a moratorium on old growth logging<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/squamish-nation-calls-for-old-growth-logging-moratorium-in-its-territory\"><span class=\"s2\">So has the Squamish Nation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Fairy Creek begins at 2 PM, with a walk from the Provincial courthouse to the legislature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is symbolic because the government is using the injunctions, which do not allow people to defend themselves \u2026 In an injunction hearing you can say whatever you to defend your actions, but the only question that is ever asked is were you aware of the injunction? Did you break the injunction? Pacheedaht elder Bill Jones was among the first to join them and quickly became the spiritual leader of this movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A number of people from both Cortes and Quadra Islands have been among the thousands reported going there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bc-cb.rcmp-grc.gc.ca\/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=2130&amp;languageId=1&amp;contentId=70632\">As of Thursday, August 5th, when the RCMP filed their most recent update<\/a><\/span>, 523 people have been arrested at Fairy Creek and 374 were charged with breaching the injunction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/33-fairy-creek-activists-arrested-as-tents-and-vehicles-block-service-roads-police-say-1.6135703\">RCMP released a statement\u00a0<\/a>saying they arrested 33 people during today\u2019s raid on Fairy Creek.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fairy Creek blockades began on August 9th a year ago, and the forest defenders are holding a celebration at the Provincial Legislature today.
