{"id":53328,"date":"2021-07-14T13:53:33","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T17:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=53328"},"modified":"2021-07-14T15:53:29","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T19:53:29","slug":"chronology-of-the-fairy-creek-logging-blockade-from-the-beginnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/chronology-of-the-fairy-creek-logging-blockade-from-the-beginnings\/","title":{"rendered":"A Fairy Creek Logging blockade timeline: The beginnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales<\/p>\n<p>Using interviews, video footage and written accounts, CKTZ News drew up a chronology for the <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/fairy-creek-blockade\/\">Fairy Creek logging blockade<\/a> from its beginnings to the current stand-off.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental protest to protect old growth forests started nearly a year ago on Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVancouver was once covered in trees that had the girth of a good third of my house. Those forests are gone,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/rainforest-flying-squad\/\">\u00a0Rainforest Flying Squad<\/a>\u00a0spokesperson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gulfislandsdriftwood.com\/news\/islanders-protect-old-growth-at-fairy-creek\/\">Carol Tootle<\/a> told CKTZ News.<\/p>\n<p>She and about 30 activists from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/victoria\/\">Victoria<\/a> assembled at Fairy Creek on Aug. 9, 2020, after being informed it was the last intact watershed on Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n<p>The activits informed the<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/rainforest-flying-squad\/\">\u00a0Pacheedaht First Nation<\/a> before putting up the first logging blockade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about stopping the logging in the tree farm license that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/teal-jones\/\">Teal Jones\u00a0<\/a>owns and is licensed to log that area. Jeff Jones<\/a>\u00a0of the Pacheedaht First Nation issued a joint press release asking the protesters to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not welcome or support unsolicited involvement or interference by others in our territory, including third-party activism.,\" the stated. \"Pacheedaht needs to be left in peace to engage in our community-led stewardship planning process, so that we can determine our own way forward as a strong and independent Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hereditary chief\u2019s involvement was significant, as the chief counsellor\u2019s legal authority is limited to the reserve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank Jones claiming himself as a Heredity Chief is false. He is not eligible to make the claim for the Jones family line, and is not informed by the hereditary system amongst our peoples.
