Photo submitted by Jessica Wegg.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>A late summer or fall election?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/politics\/ottawa\/338canada-a-summer-election-would-be-a-risky-bet-for-the-liberals\/\">According to Philippe J Fournier,<\/a>\u00a0of Macleans Magazine and the website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/338canada.com\/\">338Canada<\/a>, the rumours swirling around Ottawa suggest the election will be in late summer or early fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrunching the numbers over the weekend, the only question that kept popping in my head is: Why?\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Party is expecting an election this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t keep having\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/heat-wave-campfire-ban\/\">40 degree summers in Comox<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/survivors-of-lytton-b-c-wildfire-grapple-with-a-new-reality-most-of-their-town-is-gone-1.5495855\">wildfires destroying towns<\/a>. There were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2021\/07\/02\/washington-dc-storms-tornado\/\">tornadoes in Washington DC yesterday<\/a>. It is so obvious, so apparent and completely unsustainable. And I need to know that I did everything in my power to make it better,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/338canada.blogspot.com\/2021\/06\/a-summer-election-would-be-risky-bet.html\">Recent polls suggest that if the election were held now<\/a>, there would be another Liberal minority government.<\/p>\n<h2>Support for Greens on Vancouver Island<\/h2>\n<p>The most recent 338Canada\u2019s projection was made a week ago, at which point the Greens were leading in two Vancouver Island ridings:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/338canada.com\/59027e.htm\">Saanich-Gulf Islands<\/a>\u00a0(a safe seat) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/338canada.com\/59018e.htm\">Nanaimo-Ladysmith<\/a> (where they allegedly lead by a mere 1 per cent).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/greens-lead-on-vancouver-island\/\">During the weeks leading up to the last Federal election<\/a>, 338Canada\u2019s projects often showed the Greens leading in four of the seven island ridings. North Island-Powell River wasn\u2019t one of them, but in late August they were shown within five per cent of the leading NDP. This groundswell of support disappeared in the week prior to the election and two Green MPs went to Ottawa.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_52776\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Projections-and-election.png\" data-dt-img-description=\"338Canada\u2019s projections showed the Greens\u00a0at their strongest in late August 2019, when they were in striking distance of taking 4-7 seats. In September, a\u00a0Conservative surge threatened to push the NDP from the board. The NDP came back, taking 5 of the island\u2019s 7 seats on election day. Chart by Roy L Hales.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI know that the Green Party made a strong showing in the last election and that was with people from the NDP telling them that they were going to split the vote, and it was a wasted vote. Making people think they would have to vote orange, otherwise the Liberals or Conservatives were going to win,\u201d said Wegg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can\u2019t be afraid anymore and I think they are seeing that. We have to focus on what is in our hearts and what we know,\" she added. \"I think people are ready to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to the number of young families that moved to the island because of the pandemic. Many are no longer tied to big offices; they are working from home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents know what their kids need and their kids need a safe habitable planet, at a very basic level.
