{"id":49424,"date":"2021-03-28T16:59:10","date_gmt":"2021-03-28T20:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=49424"},"modified":"2021-03-29T14:13:41","modified_gmt":"2021-03-29T18:13:41","slug":"advocacy-group-gearing-up-to-tackle-bylaw-prohibiting-backyard-chickens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/advocacy-group-gearing-up-to-tackle-bylaw-prohibiting-backyard-chickens\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocacy group gearing up to tackle bylaw prohibiting backyard chickens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local advocacy group<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PoultryForPrinceGeorge\"> Poultry for Prince George<\/a> is getting ready to launch their first attempt in five years to change bylaws prohibiting backyard chickens in certain areas in Prince George. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group submitted a proposal for a pilot program and feasibility study to city council in 2016 that was rejected, but organizer Laura Lawrence is hopeful this time will produce different results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt's getting a lot more interest, especially since COVID. Lawrence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poultry for PG plans to hold an online meeting on April 2 to bring potential volunteers and interested community members together, spread awareness, launch research and update their proposal. Lawrence says that while the community has been supportive, they need help to bring the proposal to council with a chance of success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of people are very vocal, but we need volunteers to actually make this happen,\" Lawrence says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for support from council, Lawrence says she\u2019s not sure who will be on board. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI haven't had those conversations yet with the new council,\" she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawrence says the benefits to raising backyard chickens are range from enjoyment and mental health to additional food security. Lawrence personally experienced the negative impacts of the 2008 economic downturn and relied on her garden to feed her young children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I would have had backyard chickens, that would have added that protein piece to be able to feed my children,\" she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgecitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/how-one-northern-b-c-indigenous-farmer-is-improving-food-security-1.24240809\">reported by the Prince George Citizen<\/a> in 2020, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern B.C. is the most food-insecure part of the province, with about 17 per cent of households going hungry before the pandemic, according to B.C.\u2019s Public Health Services Authority.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While economic hardship is a significant source of food insecurity, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/hadih-house-an-oasis-in-a-soon-to-be-food-desert\/\">areas of the city soon to become \u2018food deserts\u2019<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.unbc.ca\/green\/news\/future-food-unbc\">UNBC research<\/a> has also found that Prince George \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would run out of food in an estimated two to three days\u00a0 given an emergency or natural disaster that cuts off supplies from the South.\u201d Food insecurity has the potential to become an even more widespread issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those advocating for acceptance of backyard chickens say that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/backyard-chickens-prince-george-1.3461320\">many of the concerns expressed in 2016<\/a> are unfounded and negated by <a href=\"https:\/\/powellriver.civicweb.net\/filepro\/document\/2724\/Tips%20and%20Inforamtion%20on%20Building%20a%20predator%20resistant%20chicken%20coop.pdf\">adequate coop construction<\/a> and responsible ownership. Concerns such as smell, noise, and the potential to attract rodents and bears have not played out in other municipalities where up to 6 hens, no roosters, are allowed. In 2016, <a href=\"http:\/\/250news.theexplorationplace.com\/www.250news.com\/59871.html\">then acting mayor Jillian Merrick observed<\/a> that Prince George is \u201cbehind the curve\u201d on this issue: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNorth Vancouver, Vancouver, Burnaby, Terrace, Smithers, Williams Lake, Kamloops, Kelowna - these are all communities that have backyard hen bylaws,\u201d she said during the council meeting.
