{"id":49032,"date":"2021-03-25T22:08:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T02:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=49032"},"modified":"2021-03-25T22:09:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T02:09:56","slug":"hadih-house-an-oasis-in-a-soon-to-be-food-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/hadih-house-an-oasis-in-a-soon-to-be-food-desert\/","title":{"rendered":"Hadih House an oasis for low income residents in a soon-to-be food desert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carneyhill.ca\/hadih-house\">Hadih House<\/a>\u00a0is anticipating an increase in demand for their food services such as hampers and daily breakfasts as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/prince-george-b-c-downtown-food-desert-save-on-foods-1.5935537\"> the only grocery store within walking distance is slated to close within the year.<\/a> Prior to the announcement from Save-On-Foods on 15th Ave, Carney Hill Neighbourhood Centre Society (CHNCS) Community Development Manager Jenessa Ellis says the demand for food has been increasing. \u201cOur numbers are always going up, they\u2019re never going down. Photo courtesy of Hadih House.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hadih House sees 40 to 60 people a day come through their doors, accessing services such as laundry, clothing and other donations, and social programs, though those are mostly on hold due to COVID-19. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contained in a small house on a residential street, capacity is an issue. \u201cRight now, with the funding that we are allocated and whatnot expanding is really difficult. Things like grants for renovations or expansions are hard to come by. Photo courtesy of Hadih House.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marylin Nelson, manager of Hadih House, helps coordinate the space and though they don\u2019t have regular volunteers, they say the community is very supportive, helping shovel snow and pick up garbage when needed. \u2018Hadih\u2019 means \u2018hello\u2019 or \u2018welcome\u2019 in the Dakelh language, and the space serves as a centre of community for those in the VLA, <a href=\"https:\/\/censusmapper.ca\/maps\/838#15\/53.9135\/-122.7523\">a neighbourhood with a high concentration of people living in poverty<\/a>. In a heavily stigmatized neighbourhood, Ellis says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think the biggest thing for us is just to remind people that everyone is human and treat everyone with kindness and don't judge a book by its cover.
