The Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI)<\/a> carried out a Broom Bash<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Mansons Landing Provincial Park <\/a>\u00a0on March 13.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Helen Hall<\/a>, executive director of FOCI, explained the event is held annually.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe broom is encroaching into both the fragile coastal sand ecosystem and the forested part of the Spit, competing with and shading out native vegetation growing here. We carry out a broom bash every year to keep it under control and to allow the native plants to recover and thrive,\" said Hall.<\/p>\n

Volunteers\u00a0 Leona Jensen<\/a>,\u00a0Ryan Harvey<\/a>,\u00a0Alex Bernier<\/a>,\u00a0Elizabeth Anderson<\/a>,\u00a0Don Hall<\/a>,\u00a0Dancing Wolf\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Arlene Tompkins<\/a> \u2013removed broom re-growth from the whole of the Spit, including the threatened coastal sand ecosystem, helping to restore the natural vegetation growing here.<\/p>\n
