inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0has been the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/foci\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Friends of Cortes Island's (FOCI)<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0Executive Director for close to five years. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Autumn Barret Morgan came to FOCI as a summer student and continues on as the volunteer Conservation Assistant. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In this morning's program they talk about\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/species-at-risk\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">species at risk<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> on Cortes inherit;\">Not As Developed As Other Areas<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cWe are fortunate to have so many amazing species here. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cortes is not been as developed as some of the other islands. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">We still have large intact areas of forest and a really good marine ecosystem, \u201dsaid Hall.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Some species still evidenced here are disappearing from other areas because of habitat loss and degradation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Northern goshawk<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_85164\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption inherit;\">\u201cWe have the Northern Goshawk on the island\u2026 and we know they have disappeared from other parts of the province.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/northern-goshawk\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">According to the FOCI website<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , \u201c\u2026 It is suspected that the Northern Goshawk's numbers will continue to decline due to deforestation of mature and old-growth forests. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Commercial clearcutting destroys their nesting habitat and reduces prey abundance. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Fourteen Species At Risk<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/projects\/species-at-risk\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Fourteen Species at Risk are featured<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0on the FOCI website.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cI think that if no conservation programs are in place, they are all ultimately at risk of either extirpation (disappearance locally) or extinction, but I wouldn't say right now.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They range from\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/humpback-whales\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">recently returned Humpback Whales<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0to the Great Blue Heron.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cWe also have species like the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/western-toad\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Western Toad<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , which were once locally abundant on Cortes, but haven't been recorded for the last few years. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And a little butterfly called the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/silver-spotted-skipper\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Silver Spotted Skipper<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0that was recently found here. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Then we have species like the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/big-eared-bat\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Townsend's big-eared bat<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0and\u2026 the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/pacific-sideband-snail\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Pacific Sideband Snail<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , \u201dsaid Hall.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Reappearance of The Silver Spotted Skipper<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Autumn Barret Morgan added that the Silver Spotted Skipper completely disappeared from British Columbia for more than 50 years, only to recently be found around some giant vetch plants on Cortes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThat was a huge breakthrough, realizing we can encourage all these species at risk\u2026 We can do our part and welcome them back\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\">\n<p><div FOCI<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Hall pointed out, \u201cSome species might not be recorded simply because there aren't people out there recording, you have that factor too.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And it is easy to miss a snail like the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/threaded-vertigo\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Threaded Vertigo<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , which is smaller than your thumbnail.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Great blue heron<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThe\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/great-blue-heron\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Great Blue Heron<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0is an iconic species for the coast and often seen on the beach here. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Certainly when I came to Cortes, and to Canada, as you can tell I am from England, I thought it was an amazing species because they are so big and make such a lot of noise. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Surprisingly, they are a species at risk, of special concern federally and on the blue list - which means they are also threatened provincially, \u201dsaid Hall.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201d\u2026 Over the past few years we have been monitoring them on the island, particularly whether they are nesting here or not. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There used to be big rookeries at Mansons Lagoon, Smelt Bay and various other places on the island. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">All of those have disappeared. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Last year, we had no report of blue herons nesting on the island. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThat's happening up and down the coast. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">One of the reasons is that they are more predated by eagles now. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Another reason is habitat loss and decline of food in the marine environment. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Disappearance Of The Western Toad<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Morgan cited human causes for the disappearance of Cortes Island's once abundant population of Western Toads. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They are vulnerable to the pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals we use around our homes, gardens and in the forestry sector. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Many can be killed by cars after the breeding season, when they use roads as a migration corridor from their wetland homes to the forest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cWe think they have pretty much disappeared, but it would be fantastic if we could get some records,\u201d added Hall. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cIf you see one, please email\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">She added that a quick way to differentiate between a frog and a toad, is that a toad has dry bumpy skin and a Western toad has a creamy stripe down its' back. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They also tend to walk rather than hop and lay their eggs in strings, rather than as a blob of a spawn.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Handling Frogs &amp; Toads<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Most of us have heard the story of the frog prince. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">FOCI asks that you not only refrain from kissing frogs, don't pick them up!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThese frogs are at risk of disease. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There are a lot of amphibians at risk of a fungal disease. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Handling these toads is not necessarily a good idea for the toad itself just because we can be a vector for fungal disease that doesn't affect us, but would really affect the toad population, \u201dsaid Morgan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Northern pygmy owl<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/northern-pygmy-owl\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Northern Pygmy Owl<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0is about the size of a fist and \u201clove living in open and undisturbed forests.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThey actually live in old cavities created by woodpeckers or decomposition\u2026 Each breeding pair is monogamous for the season and do their fair share of parenting, raising between 2 and 7 eggs per clutch. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u2026 They hunt in the daytime, which helps them against predation from larger owls, raptors and even racoons, \u201dexplained Morgan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">She added, \u201cA huge reason they are at risk is logging practices and the removal of snag trees, which is habitat loss.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_85176\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption inherit;\">Coastal Cutthroat Trout<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cDepending on their circumstances,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/coastal-cutthroat-trout\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Coastal Cutthroat Trout<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0will either be a freshwater only species or a sea run trout\u2026 They are actually in the same genus as salmon, so they are salmonids, but they have a different life cycle,\u201d said Morgan. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cWhether they are freshwater or marine based, they always return to the same\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/spawning-grounds\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/spawning-grounds\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">spawning ground. <\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u00a0They can respawn many times, even within a season. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThese trout are really indicative of a healthy ecosystem because they need clean water, clean gravel and a healthy flow within the stream they live in to successfully reproduce. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They are also indicative of a healthy ecosystem because they need a strong shoreline. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The lakes that we have around here are perfect for that because there is a strong vegetative shoreline which gives them protection against the sun, predators and is also perfect habitat for all the little insects that they eat. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofcortes.org\/species-at-risk\/coastal-cutthroat-trout\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">An entry on the FOCI website<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0adds, \u201cA decline in their population is indicative of a change in their habitat. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Pollution, degraded water quality, change in water flow, erosion, excess sediment, etc. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Species at Risk Program<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Helen Hall explains, \u201cWe are running our 'species at risk' program to try to find out more about these species, their status here and how that fits into the bigger picture. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Any records we get from Cortes we send down to the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/plants-animals-ecosystems\/conservation-data-centre\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Conservation Data Center in Victoria<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , so they can assess the status of different species.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There are two levels of Species at Risk, \u201cwhich reflects whether they are of concern\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/species-risk-public-registry.html\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">nationally<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0or\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/plants-animals-ecosystems\/species-ecosystems-at-risk\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">provincially. <\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">In addition, the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cosewic.ca\/index.php\/en-ca\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0(COSEWIC) advises the Federal government on the status of species and whether they should be listed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Hall explained, \u201cCOSEWIC includes a whole range of people from scientists, to researchers, ecologists, people with first nations knowledge and community members with knowledge of different species. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They assess how widespread each species is, what the risks are and what the status is. \u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Once a species is listed, a recovery plan is drawn up so that the government can start to coordinate conservation efforts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">There is much more on the FOCI website about Species at Risk and all the other great projects FOCI is involved in. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">FOCI would also love to hear from you if you think you have seen a species at risk on the
