local self-reliance. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Community non-profits like the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/developing-cortes-island-food-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cortes Community Economic Development Association<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> , the Friends of Cortes Island Society and Climate Hope are organizing to relocalize essential needs like\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/food-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">food production<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And then the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/covid-19-2\/\" data-type=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/covid-19-2\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">covid-19 pandemic<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0came along with its own challenges to the established modern food systems -\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/livestock\/hogs\/impacts-of-covid-19-on-pig-production-and-pork-processing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">bacon is under threat<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Enter The Cortes Island Shellfish Farmer<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The folks of\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cortes-island\/\" data-type=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cortes-island\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Cortes Island\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> are hearing the call. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Many people who previously had gardens are expanding them. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">People who haven't had gardens before are starting one up.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">But what about the other food groups? <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">What about the critical brain-building inflammation fighting fats, and muscle building protein?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Perhaps we will be saved by the humble Cortes Island shellfish farmer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Enter:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ourcortes.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/02\/2018-seafest-2\/\" data-type=\"http:\/\/ourcortes.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/02\/2018-seafest-2\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Erik Lyon, owner \/ operator of Rising Tide style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oysters Are Good Food<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oysters are a good food. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They're full of healthy fats, protein, vitamins and minerals. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">So the case is easy to make that we should eat them. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">But there are also some ecological benefits to growing oysters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This can be difficult to understand and accept - we've become accustomed to agriculture being a necessary evil in the quest to satisfy the hunger of 7 billion people. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It is associated with deforestation and the loss of habitat. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">water consumption and pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and so on\u2026 Could it be that oyster farming really is not just benign, but in other ways beneficial?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.viu.ca\/centre-shellfish-research-2\" data-type=\"https:\/\/research.viu.ca\/centre-shellfish-research-2\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Dr. Tim Green<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0from\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/\" data-type=\"https:\/\/www.viu.ca\/\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">VIU<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0joins us to elaborate on the beneficial impacts of shellfish farms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">He points out that having people making a nutritional and economic income from the ocean are going to be \u201cthe first ones to notice when things are going wrong and the first ones to be jumping up and down about it\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Things Are Going Wrong<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">It's complicated though. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oyster farmers do sound the alarm and need clean water; <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">they also ship much of their product around the world with refrigeration and airplanes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oyster farmers are seeing things going wrong.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Erik and Dr Green describe the impacts of climate change that they've already seen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Global average atmospheric temperatures have risen nearly 1 degree Celsius already and average ocean temperatures have risen about half that, .5 degrees Celsius. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">For a non-scientist, it can be hard to imagine how a seemingly small shift in the average can have such a big impact.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Dr Green says, it's not so much the steady but small climb in temperature, about .02 oC per year, but rather it's the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Dr Green Is Working On It<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">So, shellfish aquaculture has all this potential, and it's also facing some serious threats. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">But Dr Green is working on it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">His lab at VIU is studying how oysters are being impacted and has a selective breeding program to try to help them overcome climate challenges.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">So there's hope that oysters can adapt to climate change, but there are other challenges to the industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">How The Market Shut Down Overnight<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Erik describes how the market for oysters shut down 'over night'.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Shellfish aquaculture can help with other societal impacts from Covid-19.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">\u201cThe government of Canada is aware that some meat processing plants are reducing slaughter capacity or temporarily closing due to impacts of COVID-19, which is causing a backup of live animals on farms across the country\u201d,\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcinet.ca\/en\/2020\/04\/17\/covid-19-threatens-canadas-food-supply-farmers-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">said agriculture minister<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0Marie-Claude Bibeau.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Mary Robinson is president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcinet.ca\/en\/2020\/04\/17\/covid-19-threatens-canadas-food-supply-farmers-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">CBC reports<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0her as saying \u201cAgriculture, the foundation of our overall food supply is, at this very moment in time, at a tipping point\u2026 If we do not, as a nation, address the rising challenges immediately, Canadian consumers could see a decrease in the amount and variety of food at their local grocery stores as well as higher prices, in the months ahead\u2026 We face the possibility that crops will rot in the fields, as is now happening in other countries \u201d, pointing to labor shortages and market uncertainty due to the pandemic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The pandemic has affected the land-meat industry extensively. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The virus spreads easily in slaughterhouses and many of them have been shut down. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This has created a backlog of animals at slaughter size - - and they keep eating and costing money while they wait.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Shellfish Don't Have Those Problems<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Fruit and vegetable producers are having a hard time finding the workers to pick the fruit, resulting in food that rots in the field.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Shellfish doesn't have these problems. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They can sit on the beach and keep getting bigger and bigger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oysters have a history of helping the down-and-out. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">According to\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Big-Oyster-History-Half-Shell\/dp\/0345476395\" data-type=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Big-Oyster-History-Half-Shell\/dp\/0345476395\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Big Oyster\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> written by Mark Kurlanski - oysters may have played an important role in establishing New York City. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Kurlanski describes how one could happen on the shores, broke and jobless, and yet eat everyday from the plentiful oysters on the beach until one got a job.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">With the international and restaurant markets for shellfish having been canceled due to pandemic, and shellfish growers on the forefront of agricultural technologies that reduce our ecological footprints - it would be sensible for a large chunk of economic recovery stimulus to support the shellfish aquaculure industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And we can call for that from our governments. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">But there's something else we can do: buy and eat more shellfish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Food Preferences Change Over Time<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Food preferences change dramatically over time, and it's not until we look back on their history that we see this clearly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Avocados haven't always been so popular. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They've benefited from a clever marketing campaign. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Off to a rough start with the nickname 'Aligator Pears', they received much attention when a bunch of National Football League stars were compelled to have a guacamole cook-off. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And then some person named Kim Kardashian put avocado on her hair and another named Miley Cyrus tattooed an avocado on her arm.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Bacon was not always a popular breakfast food. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Around 100 years ago, the Beech Nut Company, in America, sought to increase bacon consumption. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They found a marketing professional who was willing to find creative ways to alter the preferences of shoppers: Mr. Edward Bernays.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Bernays had a Doctor on his team who found that a switch from a light breakfast of grains and fruit to a heavier one of bacon and eggs would be in the best interest of American's health. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The Doctor gathered found 5000 of his peers to agree and the rest is history.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Eat More Shellfish<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Erik eats oysters for breakfast. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Though working with them all the time does mean he has his limit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">But oysters aren't necessarily on the menu at home for many people in BC. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Erik sells large beach oysters overseas and cocktail oysters to the restaurant industry. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Both markets been shut down due to the pandemic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">So, just when the industrial meat packing industry is considering packing it in - shellfish is there for us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Farmers, who typically have very low profit-margins, are having to hold back full sized animals because they can't get them processed. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And farmers can't start the next round of production until the old ones are out of the way. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">The animals still need to eat, so farmers are losing money on both ends.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oysters don't have that problem. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">They can put the oysters on the beach to, largely, fend for themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">As citizens, we can do our part by investing in, and eating local, sustainably produced shellfish. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Canadians aren't in the habit of eating shellfish at home, but this can change. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Bacon wasn't a breakfast food until a marketing agency got doctors to promote it. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Avocados, or Alligator Pears as they used to be called, weren't popular until football stars and pop stars made it so.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Maybe you think shucking oysters is dangerous. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Well, a plastic surgeon in London was repairing the hands of so many people who cut themselves while slicing avocados that his staff called the injury \u201c <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20190304-how-avocados-and-kale-became-so-popular\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">avocado hand<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oysters the animal sequesters carbon. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">This benefit is usually lost in long transport distances, but a local market would help with that.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Dr Green is hopeful that his work in oyster breeding could be used to help other creatures survive the changing climate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Oysters are high in zinc, and zinc shortens the duration of the common cold, and, according to one Dr. Robb, the possibility that zinc may be of some\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcgill.ca\/oss\/article\/health\/can-zinc-lozenges-help-coronavirus-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">benefit in coronavirus infection<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"> \u00a0cannot be ruled out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And if that's not enough, they have other benefits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Erik says that there is honor, fun and adventure in shellfish. <\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">And there is
