Thousands of people in communities across the province<\/a>\u00a0took to the streets in ForestMarch 2021 on Friday.<\/p>\n

The largest Vancouver Island march was in\u00a0Victoria<\/a>, where an about 250 people gathered in Centennial Square.<\/p>\n

Some pushback<\/h2>\n

There was some pushback.<\/p>\n

What was meant to be a\u00a0healing ceremony in front of the Ministry of Forestry offices in Port McNeill\u00a0<\/a>turned into arguments between environmentalists and industry supporters.<\/p>\n

ForestMarch 2021 in Courtenay<\/h2>\n

Quadra Island residents\u00a0Geraldine Kenny<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rod Burns<\/a>\u00a0joined about 100 protesters in the driving rain at\u00a0Courtenay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

About 30% of the crowd were students.<\/p>\n

Burns mentioned a half dozen pro-industry supporters with commercially produced signs stating \u201cForestry feeds my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some nearby high school students carried homemade signs saying \u201cLiving Forests Feed Many Families\u201d and \u201cWorth More Standing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kenny alluded to the shift a public opinion, \u201c30 years ago, they would have lynched us\u201d for marching in support of the forests.<\/p>\n

She said there was a constant cacophony of supporting honks, even from a passing logging truck.<\/p>\n

From the response to her placard \u2018Clear cutting is ecocide,\u2019 Kenny concluded the word \u2018ecocide\u2019 is no longer a term only used by environmentalists. It has entered the public domain.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we eradicate these ancient forests, we\u2019re not only destroying our heritage and history, we\u2019re also killing the future for our children and all animals on this coast,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Other communities<\/h2>\n

There also\u00a0were protests in<\/a>\u00a0nearby communities Nanaimo, Qualicum, Duncan, Sechelt, and Powell River, as well as mainland centres like Vancouver, Prince George and Nelson.<\/p>\n
