Cynthia Andal, who is spearheading the project, says the model is based on the positive impacts of providing recreational programs to underhoused people in places like Toronto, Portland, OR, and Ladysmith, BC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne thing we don\u2019t talk about enough is how dehumanizing it is to be underhoused,\u201d says Andal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being underhoused can functionally exclude people from use of public space through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgematters.com\/highlights\/sitting-and-sleeping-on-downtown-sidewalks-could-net-100-fine-in-this-bc-city-1468529\">bylaws<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/prince-george-local-draws-attention-to-hostile-architecture\/\">hostile architecture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgematters.com\/local-news\/photos-on-the-front-lines-of-homelessness-downtown-with-prince-george-rcmp-1715997\">RCMP policing<\/a>, and the oversight of housed people. Ongoing conversations in letters to the editor and online comments about \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgecitizen.com\/news\/city-wants-public-input-on-downtown-issues-1.24012118\">downtown issues<\/a>\u201d in Prince George have pitted the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgecitizen.com\/opinion\/letters\/compassion-needed-1.24068445\"> needs and rights of underhoused people<\/a> to public space against the perception of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgecitizen.com\/news\/chamber-committee-wants-more-police-on-city-streets-1.24036714\">threat to local businesses<\/a> as a result of stigmatization of poverty, as well as racism, substance use and mental health issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outdoor yoga class will be held weekly at the Wood Innovation Square on 5th Avenue in proximity to the majority of social service providers and centres of community for underhoused people. At the request of city hall, and with some hesitation, Andal says the classes are open to everyone but she hopes that people will recognize that the program is intended for underhoused people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf someone does come and want to participate in this, [I hope] that it's a really respectful way that they participate [and] that they know that this is not directed to them,\" she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Andal, yoga practice and social justice are intimately linked, something that she says the current iteration of western-style yoga gets wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI think that [yoga\u2019s] roots are growing as a community,\" rather than individual growth, working towards poses, or self-centred care. \u201cPeople aren\u2019t going to see yoga like they see in the studios\u2026 in fact, a lot of the things that we will be doing might not even look like yoga specifically, because the asana (the poses), are only a very small portion of what yoga looks like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the instructors, volunteer facilitators will be on hand to ensure that the needs or attendees are met.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After getting the ball rolling, Andal put out a call to her online community and has received a lot of support. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s become a much bigger thing that I had anticipated,\u201d says Andal. There are currently instructors from every yoga studio in Prince George involved, yoga supplies have been donated by <a href=\"https:\/\/chinookyoga.com\/\">Chinook Yoga<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/coreyhardeman.ca\/\">local artist Corey Matthews<\/a> will be providing naloxone training for all volunteers.
