{"id":44987,"date":"2021-03-10T12:00:34","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T17:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=44987"},"modified":"2021-03-10T13:18:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T18:18:29","slug":"downtown-elora-and-fergus-will-see-pedestrian-only-weekends-again-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/downtown-elora-and-fergus-will-see-pedestrian-only-weekends-again-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Downtown Elora and Fergus will see pedestrian-only weekends again this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After last year\u2019s successful run at weekend street closures in downtown Elora and Fergus, Mayor Kelly Linton said they will be happening again this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Linton said certain streets will be closed from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, the same hours as last summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, in Elora, most of the downtown streets, so, Metcalfe [Street] south of Geddes [Street] and West Mill [Street] are going to be closed to traffic from May till October,\u201d Linton said.<\/p>\n<p>Linton said the Badley bridge will be kept open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, when you\u2019re coming down the hill, you turn right, and there will be barriers and planters, and we\u2019re going to be taking the parking spots out on East Mill Street, and making sure there is lots of signage, so that pedestrians and folks [heading] down to Elora can go and check out the restaurants and shops on East Mill [Street],\u201d Linton said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that they must keep that connecting link open and keep traffic flowing.<\/p>\n<p>Linton said in Fergus last year, a portion of St. Andrew\u2019s Street was closed to traffic on the weekends but it didn\u2019t really work out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, we tried it for three weeks and you know, people got frustrated, there weren\u2019t enough people coming down and walking on the streets to justify us closing the whole street, so, we adapted pretty quick and changed directions on that,\u201d Linton said.<\/p>\n<p>Linton said what worked better was shutting down Provost Lane and making it into a patio area, which will be happening again this summer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44995\" style=\"width: 372px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44995\" class=\"wp-image-44995\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-10-at-11.46.19-AM-500x302.png\" alt=\"Provost Lane in downtown Fergus is seen with blue umbrellas at park benches and tables on a sunny day\" width=\"362\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-10-at-11.46.19-AM-500x302.png 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-10-at-11.46.19-AM-320x193.png 320w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Screen-Shot-2021-03-10-at-11.46.19-AM.png 950w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44995\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Provost Lane downtown Fergus will be shut down again this summer for pedestrian-only weekends.<\/strong> Photo by Austin Cardinell.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He said the Fergus Business Improvement Area (BIA) has some great plans to really beautify the area.<\/p>\n<p>Linton also said a patio bylaw will be coming to Centre Wellington council this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that we set some rules that allow restaurants and cafes to have patios, so we can have street side dining not only on the weekends but also during the week, so we just have to make sure it\u2019s safe, and we just have to make sure it\u2019s consistent across the board, and [make] things look nice downtown,\u201d Linton said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that people really want to get out and sit around on patios downtown in both Fergus and Elora and with COVID-19 still happening, it\u2019s important the township has outdoor dining opportunities for some of the businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Township of Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton:<\/strong><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-44987-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/edited-clip-mkl.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/edited-clip-mkl.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/edited-clip-mkl.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After last year\u2019s successful run at weekend street closures in downtown Elora and Fergus, Mayor Kelly Linton said they will be happening again this summer.
