{"id":44232,"date":"2021-03-07T23:24:28","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T04:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=44232"},"modified":"2021-03-08T11:53:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T16:53:56","slug":"sd57-rejects-calls-for-mandatory-masks-in-elementary-schools-despite-community-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/sd57-rejects-calls-for-mandatory-masks-in-elementary-schools-despite-community-support\/","title":{"rendered":"SD57 rejects calls for mandatory masks in elementary schools despite community support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Nadia Mansour<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight-year-old CaIysta Meletis-McDowell witnessed an issue and immediately sprung to action in regards to mandatory mask wearing for all grades in the schools. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of her class of 22 students, only three were wearing masks at school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to see more people wearing masks in my classroom,\" Meletis-McDowell said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CaIysta\u2019s mother, Zoe Meletis, lent her daughter a helping hand to get the word out to a greater audience in a COVID-19 friendly way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen Calysta started the petition, she was going to bring it to school,\" says Meletis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fear was sharing it around, so Meletis helped her daughter start an online petition to garner support from the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their goal is 500 signatures and, so far, the support from the community has been evident. As of March 7, 493 signatures were in support of having mandatory masks for all grades, with the consideration of medical exceptions. The petition can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/school-district-57-board-of-education-support-mandatory-masking-for-all-ages-in-school-district-57-w-medical-exceptions\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy do I have to wear a mask everywhere else, but the place where I spend most of my time, I don\u2019t?\u201d said Meletis, speaking to the disconnect elementary kids are witnessing, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChildren are vectors\u2026they bring home lots of colds, we are pretending they have this little learning group bubble and so it's okay that they don't wear masks,\" she added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/192\/38\/E1102\">Evidence suggests<\/a> that children over 10 are just as likely to be infected and to infect others. Experts warn that though there is a lack of reliable research on younger children, underestimating their susceptibility could be a mistake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no good argument against requiring masks,\u201d Meletis said. \u201cThe teachers union is in favour and the World Health Organization says that children over the age of two should be masked when they can\u2019t socially distance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meletis attended several School District No. 57 (SD57) board meetings in hopes of amassing support from officials. After some time, the school board responded to Meletis\u2019s claims with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/covid-19-bc-school-guidelines-enhanced-health-and-safety-measures-announced-1.5899483\">statement<\/a> that they would continue to follow the provincial regulations set in place<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe letter was disappointing\u2026it\u2019s not true that the school board always has to follow in line, they can be brave and take additional measures,\" Meletis explains on how she felt upon receiving the response from the school board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she points out, SD57 did alter it\u2019s COVID-19 protocols to include mandatory masks at school for all teachers following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgecitizen.com\/news\/teachers-union-calls-for-mandatory-masks-in-p-g-schools-1.24243191\">pressure from the teachers union<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meletis believes that the school boards efforts \u201care sending a message to kids and families that they matter less\u2026 [and that] the actors [of the] school board do not need to be responsive to all members of the community, they only need to be responsive to the province.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meletis and her daughter remain hopeful that this issue will stay in the public eye and continue to garner attention from policy makers and health officials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the interview on CFUR-FM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-44232-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210228-zoe-meletis-COOOOOOl_mixdown.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210228-zoe-meletis-COOOOOOl_mixdown.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/20210228-zoe-meletis-COOOOOOl_mixdown.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Nadia Mansour Eight-year-old CaIysta Meletis-McDowell witnessed an issue and immediately sprung to action in regards to mandatory mask wearing for all grades in the schools.
