{"id":43961,"date":"2021-03-05T12:19:13","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T17:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=43961"},"modified":"2021-12-06T14:58:24","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T19:58:24","slug":"residents-vote-down-proposed-area-rate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/residents-vote-down-proposed-area-rate\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents vote down proposed area rate for Seaside Rec Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents have voted down a request for an area rate to support the Seaside Recreation Centre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/seaside-centre-seeking-stability-through-tax-rate\/\">The centre\u2019s board is asking Region of Queens council to impose a tax of four cents per hundred dollars of assessment<\/a> on property owners in Assessment District 7, which includes Beach Meadows, Eagle Head, East Berlin, West Berlin and Port Medway.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 223 people who turned out at the Seaside Centre Wednesday night, 192 were against the area rate while only 30 cast ballots in support.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for the Seaside Recreation and Community Centre Association Damien van den Berg was surprised by the lopsided result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was probably thinking it would have been more evenly split,\u201d said van den Berg.<\/p>\n<p>The vote itself is non-binding on regional council but the results will be taken into account when they consider the rest of the area rate application at an upcoming meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Based on this result, van den Berg suspects the group may have some work to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to get exactly what we applied for.
