{"id":43050,"date":"2021-03-03T09:17:29","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T14:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=43050"},"modified":"2021-03-08T12:03:53","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T17:03:53","slug":"wu-on-mental-health-impacts-of-anti-east-asian-racism-during-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/wu-on-mental-health-impacts-of-anti-east-asian-racism-during-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Research project studies mental health impacts of anti-East Asian racism during pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Karen Young<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As<\/span> we enter <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March, it is nearly the one year mark since Toronto went into the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6859636\/ontario-coronavirus-timeline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The city experienced an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/community-people\/get-involved\/community\/toronto-for-all\/anti-east-asian-racism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase of anti-East Asian racism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> early on in the outbreak after early cases of COVID-19 were traced back to Wuhan, China and a local professor has been studying those impacts through his research initiative <em>The Asian Experience Project<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.laps.yorku.ca\/profiles\/carywu\/\">Assistant Professor Cary Wu<\/a> has been teaching at York University over the past year and has been studying how COVID-19 has been affecting the well-being of the Asian community in North America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Wu's students shared an incident with him when he was still teaching in person in the spring. She explained that some people would just push her during the pandemic. Headshot courtesy of Cary Wu.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wu and his colleagues describe COVID-19 as a \u201cshadow pandemic.\u201d While there are a few definitions of a \u201cshadow pandemic\u201d globally due to the rise in anti-East Asian hate crimes, it is referencing the rise in anti- East Asian sentiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wu shared insight on alleviating anti-East Asian discrimination in reporting. He <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emphasizes\u00a0 the importance of not only objective reporting, research and data collection, but also institutional education and socialization to combat generational racism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHistorically, when we look at one generation to another when we look at those issues of racism, a lot has to do with socialization or institutional education...We need to find ways to start early in school,\u201d Wu says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his research, Wu has also noticed a difference in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3626460\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health gap between the Asian and white communities in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In general, there were reports of poor mental health due to COVID-19 and the rise of anti-East Asian racism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the Asian community, there was also a gap between Asian-Canadians and Asian immigrants \u2014 \"Asian-Canadians\" refers to those of Asian descent who were born in Canada, while \"Asian immigrants\" refers to those with Asian descent who were born outside of Canada. <\/span>The effects of discrimination on Asian-Canadians could have a\u00a0 stronger negative impact on their mental health when compared to Asian immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is their home. This is their country. If they were treated unfairly in their own country those kind of experiences could have stronger, negative impact on their mental health,\" Wu explains.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Asian Experience Project <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an ongoing research project by Wu and his team.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It aims to hear both positive and negative experiences during COVID-19 from those that self-identify as Asian. The goal is to look at the direct and indirect racism on the Asian community.
