{"id":41486,"date":"2021-02-24T13:31:08","date_gmt":"2021-02-24T18:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=41486"},"modified":"2021-02-24T13:51:31","modified_gmt":"2021-02-24T18:51:31","slug":"ecosystem-interference-from-coastal-gaslink-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/ecosystem-interference-from-coastal-gaslink-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecosystem interference from Coastal GasLink explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The controversy surrounding environmental impact from the Coastal GasLink pipeline is still ongoing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December 2020, Coastal GasLink came under scrutiny by BC\u2019s Environmental Assessment Office for failing to comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.eao.gov.bc.ca\/api\/public\/document\/5fd9444b09bdf60021a463f9\/download\/EN2020-011_Coastal%20Gaslink_2020-12-08_Section_53_Order_ESC.pdf\">proper erosion and sediment control measures<\/a>. An order was put in place for an independent auditor to conduct biweekly monitoring reports, which would be reviewed by the Environmental Assessment Office rather than Coastal GasLink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastal GasLink is a 670 km pipeline project designed to carry natural gas, obtained by hydraulic fracturing operations in northeastern BC, westbound across the province. After transport, it is converted to a liquified state in a $40 billion facility and then exported to global markets, such as those within Asia via t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Douglas Channel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many LNG producers, TC Energy hopes to replace carbon-heavy coal-fired energy in Asia with a cleaner gas alternative.
