A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/western-economic-diversification\/news\/2021\/01\/government-of-canada-explores-new-approaches-to-regional-economic-development-in-western-canada.html\">\u00a0government press release<\/a>\u00a0identified \u201cstakeholders from the South Okanagan, Kootenays, Vancouver Island and Central Coast regions.\u201d These include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/canadian-government-looking-to-create-new-regional-development-agency-focused-on-british-columbia\/\">eleven key BC innovation organizations<\/a>, like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wearebctech.com\/\">BC Tech Association<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venturelabs.ca\/\">SFU venture labs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accelerateokanagan.com\/\">Accelerate Okanagan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba were all lumped together in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wd-deo.gc.ca\/eng\/home.asp\">Western Economic Diversification Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has been almost three months since <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/there-will-be-a-plan-to-address-fisheries-and-job-losses-in-the-discovery-islands\/\">Joly<\/a>\u00a0acknowledged British Columbia needs a separate Regional Development Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Joly describes Regional Development Agencies as a \u201ckind of a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs.\u201d Her ministry currently has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbusiness.ca\/5-Questions-Melanie-Joly-shares-her-plans-to-launch-BCs-own-regional-development-agency\">an office in Vancouver<\/a>, but none across the different regions.<\/p>\n<p>In a public letter released yesterday, Blaney stated, \u201cthere is no region more fitting of this mandate than the one I represent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She described a series of negative economic blows. No sooner had the region\u2019s 10-month long forestry strike ended, than the COVID-19 pandemic began. A thriving tourism industry was put on hold. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulpandpapercanada.com\/catalyst-paper-exec-meets-with-mayor-about-ongoing-powell-river-mill-closure\/\">paper mill in Powell River was shut down<\/a> due to a lack of fibre. The region\u2019s already sport fishing industry was hit by new restrictions on chinook salmon retention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen in December, your government announced the decision to phase out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/discovery-island-fish-farms\/\">licenses for the open-pen salmon farms in the Discovery Islands<\/a>.
