{"id":39067,"date":"2021-02-13T22:51:38","date_gmt":"2021-02-14T03:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=39067"},"modified":"2021-02-18T14:26:36","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T19:26:36","slug":"rcmp-restorative-justice-program-can-provide-alternative-to-criminal-justice-system-for-lucky-few","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/rcmp-restorative-justice-program-can-provide-alternative-to-criminal-justice-system-for-lucky-few\/","title":{"rendered":"RCMP restorative justice can provide alternative to criminal justice system for lucky few"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/princegeorge.rcmp-grc.gc.ca\/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=1537&amp;languageId=1&amp;contentId=49862\">Community Policing arm of the Prince George RCMP<\/a> is seeking to expand interest and awareness about its <a href=\"https:\/\/princegeorge.rcmp-grc.gc.ca\/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=1537&amp;languageId=1&amp;contentId=50028\">restorative justice program<\/a> among RCMP officers, community partners and the public. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgematters.com\/local-news\/prince-george-rcmp-responded-to-more-than-46k-files-in-2020-amid-covid-19-3256182\">Prince George RCMP responded to more than 46,000 files<\/a> but only a handful of them, a maximum of 60, make their way to the restorative justice department each year. Photo courtesy of Linda Parker.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an extremely small budget, and being reliant on a team of committed volunteers, Parker is cautious of expanding the workload too quickly due to the limited resources at her disposal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of work to process a file,\u201d she says, as the collaboration requires coordinating multiple schedules, accommodating different priorities, and committing to ensure compliance with the agreements set in the restorative justice process through follow up appointments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the pay off for taxpayers of expanding restorative practice could be significant. In 2008, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/rp-pr\/csj-sjc\/crime\/rr10_5\/rr10_5.pdf\">the Department of Justice Canada reported<\/a> the \u201ccosts pertaining to the Canadian criminal justice system\u2026 amounted to about $15 billion for policing, court, prosecution, legal aid, correctional services and mental health review boards\u201d with about a third of that amount spent on corrections and the courts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the City of Prince George spent $27 million on the RCMP, the biggest single line item at 24.5 per cent of the overall budget, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/princegeorge.ethelo.net\/page\/YourProperty-Taxes\">Citizen Budget 2021 survey<\/a>. Restorative justice provides a potential alternative to these sizable costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The positive impact on the individuals involved, both victims and offenders, is often tangible.
