The Strathcona Regional District (SRD)<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0applying for a grant<\/a>\u00a0to assess the potential extent of\u00a0sea level rise<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Cortes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Quadra Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Union of BC Municipalities<\/a>\u00a0is willing to\u00a0provide successful applicants with up to<\/a>\u00a0$150,000<\/a>\u00a0to ensure they have accurate knowledge of the potential flood hazards and develop effective strategies to mitigate the risks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe grant program can contribute up to 100% of the cost of eligible activities \u2026 provided the application has a Council or Board resolution confirming support for the proposed activities and for providing overall grant management. Local governments can submit one application per intake. The submission deadline for this grant is February 26, 2021,\u201d\u00a0wrote CAO David Leitch<\/a>, in the associated staff report.<\/p>\n

Geographic data would be used<\/a> to model the potential threat to residences, docks, marinas, regional and provincial parks.<\/p>\n

Specific areas on Cortes and Quadra Islands<\/h2>\n

If the SRD obtains this funding, it will be used to develop a model of the potential rise on Cortes and Quadra Islands by 2100 and 2200.<\/p>\n

Smelt Bay, Mansons Landing Park, Rebecca Spit, Quathiaski Cove, Hoskyn Channel, Hank\u2019s Beach, Gnat Park and Moon Park were among the locations specifically mentioned.<\/p>\n

Once completed, the proposed project will support local governments\u2019 and First Nations\u2019 ability to better understand the risk of sea level rise, support land use planning and policy development and provide information for public outreach efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
