{"id":36660,"date":"2021-02-03T15:22:32","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T20:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=36660"},"modified":"2021-02-03T15:26:25","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T20:26:25","slug":"nelson-police-chief-on-rising-mental-health-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/nelson-police-chief-on-rising-mental-health-calls\/","title":{"rendered":"Nelson police chief on rising mental health calls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the last three years, mental health-related calls to the Nelson police have been increasing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Several years ago, the Nelson Police Department pitched the idea of having a mental health worker ride-along with police officers, but the idea was shot down by Interior Health. \u201cCar 87\u201d was modeled after a successful program in the Downtown Eastside that began in 1987, although not every police vehicle has a mental health worker in it now. And in the past year, there has been an increase of people in Canada and the U.S. calling to defund the police and spend those budgets on social services instead. There\u2019s currently a commission in B.C. working on reviewing police relations with mental health and race. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think we\u2019re very good at these types of calls, I just don\u2019t think we should be the ones that are doing it,\" Chief Const. Paul Burkart said. \"There are better people in the community to be dealing with some of these calls.
