{"id":35820,"date":"2021-01-29T17:09:24","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T22:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=35820"},"modified":"2021-01-29T17:09:24","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T22:09:24","slug":"port-elgin-hometown-heroes-recognized-by-province","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/port-elgin-hometown-heroes-recognized-by-province\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Elgin hometown heroes recognized by province"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two of the 89 \"Stepping Up for My New Brunswick\" honorees come from the small Tantramar town of Port Elgin.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mount Allison alumnus and Port Elgin-raised, Becker received provincial recognition for his food delivery efforts during the pandemic\u2019s early days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Becker applied for a Rising Youth grant after being laid off from his hospitality job in Halifax, and found the process surprisingly straightforward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the grant, Becker arranged for food boxes to be delivered to families in need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-35820-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Jeshua-Becker-Step-Up-for-NB.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Jeshua-Becker-Step-Up-for-NB.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Jeshua-Becker-Step-Up-for-NB.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He says he still has no idea who may have nominated him, and is honoured to be recognized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Becker encourages all those with a community improvement idea to apply for available grants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Current Mount Allison student Hannah Crouse is another Tantramar-hailing recipient of the Stepping Up for My New Brunswick recognition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crouse\u2019s \u201cCommunity Connect\u201d project launched last July, which aimed to connect isolated seniors and youth with food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The project led to Crouse\u2019s nomination for provincial recognition, which she says was \u201cfantastic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Community Connect project has grown exponentially since its early days, and is now integrated with Mount Allison to allow students to participate for credit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-35820-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hannah-Crouse-Step-Up-For-NB.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hannah-Crouse-Step-Up-For-NB.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Hannah-Crouse-Step-Up-For-NB.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her Community Connect project, founded in July of last year, continues to expand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crouse hopes that a new executive will rise to take over once she and her peers graduate from Mount Allison.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two of the 89 &#8220;Stepping Up for My New Brunswick&#8221; honorees come from the small Tantramar town of Port Elgin.
