{"id":32818,"date":"2021-01-15T15:01:45","date_gmt":"2021-01-15T20:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=32818"},"modified":"2021-01-15T15:01:45","modified_gmt":"2021-01-15T20:01:45","slug":"north-vancouver-island-mayors-support-fish-farms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/north-vancouver-island-mayors-support-fish-farms\/","title":{"rendered":"North Vancouver Island Mayors support fish farms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales<\/p>\n<p>Salmon farming is a significant local employer in Northern Vancouver Island.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ready.bcsalmonfarmers.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/BCSFA-ECONOMIC-IMPACT-REPORT-FINAL.pdf\">According to a recent report<\/a>\u00a0there are 572\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/campbell-river\/\">Campbell River<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/sayward\/\">Sayward<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/discovery-island-fish-farms\/\">Discovery Islands residents\u00a0<\/a>working in this sector. 702 people are said to have indirect jobs, which means the industry is bringing about $324 million a year into the local economy. It is science based, with the innovation and technology that have made it the number one agricultural export for the province of British Columbia and that industry is at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is 1,500 employees in the North Island. We had a video conference Friday with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.bc.ca\/learn-about-us\/members\/42nd-Parliament\/Kahlon-Ravi\">Minister Kahlon<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/michele-babchuk\/\">MLA Babchuk<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.bc.ca\/learn-about-us\/members\/42nd-Parliament\/Osborne-Josie\">Minister Osborne<\/a>\u00a0reviewing the economic impact. We were to have a video conference this morning with MP Blaney, however that got sidetracked and is now trying to be rescheduled with the parties that we agree should be there.
