The\u00a0arrival of an additional 3,900 doses of the Pfizer vaccine<\/a>\u00a0allowed\u00a0Island Health<\/a>\u00a0to vaccinate health care workers in North and Central Vancouver Island. Vaccinations of health care workers and volunteers started in\u00a0Campbell River<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Vaccinations started<\/h2>\n

\u201cToday is important because we need to get as many shots around Canada as possible, to slow this down,\u201d said Lynn Wurz, a volunteer for baby clinics and the hospital thrift shop in Campbell River.<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI think our grandchildren should record this somehow. Take pictures of everybody in masks, around town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been hoping for this day since the spring when the pandemic started and preparing for it since the summer. The public health nurses and leaders have been working so hard \u2026 So it is really incredible to be here today \u2026 getting to administer vaccines and saving lives,\u201d said Tara FitzGerald, the Director of Public Health with Island Health.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a pretty emotional day for everybody. The public health teams have been working in extraordinary times, putting out an outstanding effort. It is amazing to see from COVID testing and collection, to contact tracing and case management to now vaccine administration \u2026 The accomplishments that our public health nurses, teams and leaders have made are truly awe inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

FitzGerald stressed the manner in which COVID impacted everyones lives and families.<\/p>\n

On a personal level, she said \u201cmy daughter\u2019s great grandmother was in hospital when the visitor restrictions began.\u201d<\/p>\n

First Nations vaccines begin<\/h2>\n

\u201cMy family has ties to the\u00a0Snuneymuxw First Nation<\/a>\u00a0[in the Greater Nanaimo area] and yesterday our public health program was able to administer vaccines,\u201d said FitzGerald.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0acting chief medical officer Dr. Shannon MacDonald<\/a>, 191 First Nations members in Island Health have tested positive since the pandemic began.<\/p>\n

Four were on\u00a0Cortes Island<\/a>, where the\u00a0Klahoose Nation<\/a>\u00a0received 60 doses of the\u00a0Moderna vaccine<\/a>\u00a0this week.<\/p>\n

Vancouver Island Statistics<\/h2>\n

According to the\u00a0Island Health COVID dashboard<\/a>, there are now 152 active COVID cases on Vancouver Island, 26 of which are in North Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n

The BC Centre for Disease control released statics for the number of\u00a0new cases in North Vancouver Island during December<\/a>.* There were 37 in the Comox Valley Health Area,18 in the Greater Campbell River area, 12 in North Island and 2 in West Island.<\/p>\n
