{"id":31279,"date":"2021-01-07T16:18:53","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T21:18:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=31279"},"modified":"2021-01-08T12:45:13","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T17:45:13","slug":"new-brunswick-provincial-government-sued-over-abortion-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/new-brunswick-provincial-government-sued-over-abortion-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"New Brunswick provincial government sued over abortion regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Canadian Civil Liberties Association held a teleconference today to address New Brunswick\u2019s Regulation 84-20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the conference was in progress, the CCLA (CCLA) filed its formal lawsuit against the province by Dropbox yesterday, citing violations of the Canadian Health Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In their press release, the CCLA pointed our that New Brunswick\u2019s Regulation 84-20 only permits three hospitals, in two cities, to carry out abortion services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This leaves 90 per cent of New Brunswick residents without adequate abortion services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHMA contacted Tasia Alexopoulos, representative of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, who attended the teleconference call:<\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-31279-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CCLA-lawsuit-against-the-province.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CCLA-lawsuit-against-the-province.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/CCLA-lawsuit-against-the-province.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Alexopoulos, the current Conservative majority government is growing more solid in its stance against repealing Regulation 84-20 the longer time goes on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Health Minister Dorothy Sheppard was asked about the lawsuit during the COVID-19 press conference yesterday and was unable to comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CCLA filed the lawsuit after multiple attempts to come to an agreement with the provincial government, to no avail.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian Civil Liberties Association held a teleconference today to address New Brunswick\u2019s Regulation 84-20.
