He arrived around December 20th and chose one of the corner units, looking out into the forest. The 650 square foot cottage was more than three times the size of the camper Nagory had been living in and possessed more up to date amenities. The faint aroma of fresh paint still lingered inside his new home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, this is the most perfect house that I can ever dream of,\u201d exclaimed Axel.<\/p>\n<p>The Cortes Community Housing press release for this project says another long-time island Cortes resident moved in on the 20th.<\/p>\n<p>On December 31st, Axel told Cortes Currents that he believed both units in the new duplex beside the <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cortes-medical-clinic\/\">Cortes Medical Clinic<\/a>\u00a0were occupied and a woman is moving into the last of the new cottages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/sandra-wood\/\">Housing Coordinator Sandra Wood<\/a>\u00a0subsequently emailed that while all the units have been approved for occupancy, no one is living in the duplex yet.<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cWe still have work to do on the grounds &amp; final finishing details including installing drapes &amp; landscaping etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Seniors Village<\/h2>\n<p>The four new units are all 650 square feet.<\/p>\n<p>They share a central courtyard with six cottages that were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/cgi-bin\/tideline\/show_articles.cgi?ID=1859&amp;TOPIC=0\">built in 2008\/09<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Downtown Mansons Landing is within easy walking distance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/news\/community-stories\/Cortes-Island-seniors-village\">Tenants will pay about $535<\/a>\u00a0a month, but the specific amounts are adjusted to ensure that no one spends more than 30% of their income on rent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><figcaption>\n<div id=\"attachment_30260\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1686.jpeg\" data-dt-img-description=\"The two new cottages on the eastern end of the Seniors Village (Axel's is the blue one to the right)\u2013 Roy L Hales photo\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30260\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30260\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1686.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1686.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1686-500x281.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1686-320x180.jpeg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-30260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The two new cottages on the eastern end of the Seniors Village (Axel's is the blue one to the right)\u2013 Roy L Hales photo<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Financing the units<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortescommunityhousing.org\/meetings\/raising-the-roof\/\">Cortes Island Senior\u2019s Society<\/a>\u00a0provided the land on which these units were built.<\/p>\n<p>Around $100,000 was raised through donations and the provincial government granted another $400,000 through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/projects-partners\/Building-BC\">Building BC program.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/bc-housing\/\">BC Housing\u00a0<\/a>provided\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchousing.org\/news\/community-stories\/Cortes-Island-seniors-village\">about $1 million in construction financing and annual operating funds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>A message of thanks<\/h2>\n<p>The Cortes Community Housing press release contained a message of thanks for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe amazing residents of the Seniors Village who had their much-deserved peace and quiet utterly disrupted by close-in construction for the past seven months.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe countess hours of care and attention to details by the carpenters, their helpers, the experienced sub trades, the guidance of a professional contractor and the back-office staff from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kineticconstruction.com\/\">Kinetic Construction<\/a>; together they delivered 4 new seniors cottages on time within all the BC Housing guidelines.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe untold volunteer hours by the directors of both the Senior Society as well as the directors and staff of the Housing Society to get us where we are today.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe overwhelming outpouring of support from every corner of our community who took the time and effort to advocate for the rezoning of (the next phase of affordable housing development)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/rainbow-ridge\/\">Rainbow Ridge<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe sadness of not being able to provide all the features that we might have preferred.
