{"id":30189,"date":"2020-12-31T16:30:48","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T21:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=30189"},"modified":"2020-12-31T16:30:48","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T21:30:48","slug":"human-touch-most-missed-by-nanaimos-member-of-the-provincial-legislature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/human-touch-most-missed-by-nanaimos-member-of-the-provincial-legislature\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Human touch&#8221; most missed by Nanaimo&#8217;s member of the provincial legislature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nanaimo's member of the legislative assembly says she's looking forward to saying goodbye to 2020 tonight.\u00a0 Sheila Malcolmson is planning a quiet new year's eve with her long-time partner, Howard, at their Gabriola Island home.\u00a0 She says the past year has been a very different type of whirlwind, both personally and politically.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-30189-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clip-MALCOLMSON-year-end-1.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clip-MALCOLMSON-year-end-1.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clip-MALCOLMSON-year-end-1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Malcolmson has spent most of the past twenty years in politics.\u00a0 Her first foray was in 2002 as an elected member of the Islands' Trust, representing the interests of people who live on the small Gulf Islands that hug BC's southwest coast.\u00a0 During her 13 year-long tenure, she pushed for improved relations with local first nations that culminated in the signing of an agreement between the Snuneymuxw First Nation and the Islands Trust.\u00a0 It was one of the first agreements in BC, to establish formal, government-to-government protocols for planning, land use management and heritage conservation.\u00a0 In 2015, she was elected as the member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Ladysmith, where she focused her attention on environmental issues.\u00a0 Malcolmson gave up her federal seat in 2019, to run in a crucial provincial by-election.\u00a0 Her win tipped the balance of power that allowed the NDP to form government in British Columbia.\u00a0 Malcolmson was re-elected last fall and was rewarded with a cabinet position.\u00a0 She says becoming BC's Minister of Mental Health and Addictions has been a steep learning curve.
