The new COVID 19 variant reached Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0Ministry of Health statement<\/a>\u00a0released Sunday, \u201cThe individual, who resides in the\u00a0Island Health region<\/a>, returned to BC from the\u00a0UK<\/a>\u00a0on flight AC855 on Dec. 15, 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nanaimo resident may have contracted the new COVID variant<\/h2>\n

CTV news suggests<\/a>\u00a0this may be the person that a flight exposure warning from the\u00a0BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC)<\/a>\u00a0mentions landing at the\u00a0Vancouver International Airport<\/a>. An infected person was on a Dec. 15 Air Canada flight 855 from London to Vancouver.<\/p>\n

Another exposure warning from the BCCDC indicates an infected person travelled from the Vancouver airport to the city of Nanaimo.<\/p>\n

This individual developed symptoms while in quarantine and was tested immediately, according to the statement. The test came back positive on Dec.19, 2020.<\/p>\n

Variant does not appear to have spread<\/h2>\n

In speaking with CTV News, Dr. Henry said the person\u2019s infection \u201cdoes not appear to have spread.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe person was maintaining their quarantine \u2026 (and has) very few close contacts so we\u2019re monitoring them very carefully,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s statement also said, \u201cIt is important to note there is no evidence that the new COVID-19 variant is more likely to cause severe illness, nor is there evidence to suggest the Health Canada-approved vaccines will be any less effective against the new variant.\u201d<\/p>\n
