The operating period for this facility will be 8am to 5pm 5 days per week. The refuse discharged, will contain saw dust, wood chips, hog fuel, end cuts of wood less than 1 metre in length, dredging\u2019s of wood waste, sand, gravel, rocks, inert waste and inert cover material. All material will be non-hazardous and covered through intermediate cover material until the landfill is completed (15 months) and a final low-permeability cover will be put on top and soils and vegetation will be replanted,\" the application states.<\/p>\n<p>The matter was brought before the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/quathet-regional-district\/\">quathet Regional District Board<\/a> on Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prpeak.com\/news\/wood-waste-landfill-proposed-north-of-lund-1.24253352?\">Powell River Peak<\/a>, Powell River City Director George Doubt calculated the project works out to moving 81 dump truck loads of wood waste, with a pup trailer, per day, five days a week over a 15 month period.<\/p>\n<p>In the article, it reported that qRD planner Julia Dykstra replied, \u201cThey are planning on barging it from the Squamish area to the actual location and they are not proposing any road use over the Sarah Point Road at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_27332\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-14-at-6.26.22-AM.png\" data-dt-img-description=\"Map showing the Waterfront Landing area\u00a0\u2013 city of Squamish\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27332\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27332\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-14-at-6.26.22-AM-266x500.png\" alt=\"Map showing the Waterfront Landing area\" width=\"266\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-14-at-6.26.22-AM-266x500.png 266w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-14-at-6.26.22-AM-114x215.png 114w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Screen-Shot-2020-12-14-at-6.26.22-AM.png 393w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-27332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map showing the Waterfront Landing area\u00a0\u2013 city of Squamish<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Where the waste is coming from<\/h2>\n<p>Some opponents of the project are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/lundcommunity\/permalink\/1866002646893093\/\">concerned about waste materials <\/a>\u201ccoming from a site in Squamish that is notorious for contamination from industrial activity, including a nearby mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wood waste comes from an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/squamish.ca\/yourgovernment\/projects-and-initiatives\/waterfront-landing-park\/\">old Interfor sawmill<\/a>\u00a0site in Squamish, which was operational\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.squamishchief.com\/news\/local-news\/converting-wood-waste-to-bioenergy-1.23350891\">during the 1980s and 1990s<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/squamish.civicweb.net\/document\/157449\">Waterfront Landing<\/a>\u00a0is on the eastern shore of Mamquam Blind Cannel, across from the downtown core.
