{"id":25150,"date":"2020-12-02T14:41:22","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T19:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=25150"},"modified":"2020-12-03T15:40:20","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T20:40:20","slug":"update-on-the-covid-19-outbreak-in-the-klahoose-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/update-on-the-covid-19-outbreak-in-the-klahoose-village\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on the COVID-19 outbreak in the Klahoose First Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Max Thaysen<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/klahoose-first-nation\/\">Klahoose First Nation<\/a>\u00a0continues to deal with a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/covid-19-2\/\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0outbreak in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Kevin Peacey posted an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show24s\/Covid-19__Cortes_Island\">\u00a0update to cortesisland.com\u00a0<\/a>yesterday (Dec. 1), explaining that the Klahoose Nation has declared a state of emergency. Four people in the village have tested positive. There are no reports of the virus reaching the wider Cortes Island community.<\/p>\n<p>The Toq village has a staffed checkpoint at the Whaletown Road entry, to prevent any unauthorized comings and goings. They are only permitting \u201csupplies, essential deliveries, emergency services and front line workers\u201d in order to contain the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The nation has expanded the medical team, adding a nurse and getting support from the doctor at the Cortes Community Health Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Testing and contact tracing is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Peacey thanks the non-indigenous community for donations of firewood to keep the checkpoint staff warm and says they have a \u201cgood supply now.\"<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/covid-19\/documents\/public-health-covid19-daily-dashboard.pdf\">Island Health COVID-19 dashboard <\/a>reports that there are 39 active cases in the North Vancouver Island region and two days have passed since a new case was reported to the health agency.<\/p>\n<p>Island Health recommends that BC residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/learn-about-health\/covid-19\/information-general-public\">were masks, wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer, follow good respiratory etiquette and stay home if they are sick or experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25159\" style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1736669057_092db88c2d_c.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25159\" class=\"wp-image-25159 \" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1736669057_092db88c2d_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1736669057_092db88c2d_c.jpg 799w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1736669057_092db88c2d_c-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1736669057_092db88c2d_c-320x213.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: A lonely clove by Andy Thrasher via Flickr (CC BY SA, 2.0 License)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>A local doctor\u2019s advice<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Jenna Creaser, from the Cortes Community Health Centre, recommends that people take extra care during the ongoing pandemic to maximize their immune systems.<\/p>\n<p>Her prescription is:<\/p>\n<p>A well rounded diet with minimal sugar, lots of colourful fruits and vegetables, protein, plus:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Garlic \u2013 two cloves per day, best if chopped up and fresh<\/li>\n<li>Ginger \u2013 one inch piece grated or steeped per day<\/li>\n<li>Turmeric \u2013 approx. one tsp. powder most days<\/li>\n<li>Probiotic and fermented foods \u2013 e.g. kefir, plain yoghurt, pickled vegetables, kimchi, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Mushrooms \u2013 i.e. culinary (shitake, button) and medicinal (reishi, chaga, lion\u2019s mane)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And avoid added sugar as much as possible!<\/p>\n<p>FOUR SUPPLEMENTS \u2013 For an extra boost<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based on your diet and lifestyle, pick a few of these to take:<\/li>\n<li>Zinc \u2013 i.e. Zinc acetate, citrate or glycinate, 30-60 mg total daily in 2-3 divided doses<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin D \u2013 1000-5000 IU daily (she recommend 1000 IU in summer, 2000 IU in winter)<\/li>\n<li>Elderberry \u2013 aka Sambucus nigra, 500 mg daily<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin C \u2013 1000-3000mg (1-3g) daily (if not attained from diet)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doses listed are for a healthy adult and may vary.<\/p>\n<p>Two soothers: For mind, body and spirit<br \/>\n1. Stress reduction. Identify and reduce stress with exercise, self care, solo time and connection.<br \/>\n2. Sleep. Get enough (8 hours a night)! Keep the time you go to bed and wake up time consistent.<\/p>\n<p>Exercise \u2014 20 minutes each day: walking, yoga or whatever suits you.<\/p>\n<h2>One affirmation<\/h2>\n<p>Use the power of intention Creaser said. Try sitting quietly and read or say the following to yourself: \u201cI can feel my immune system working well inside of me. It\u2019s strong and effective. I know it\u2019s doing it\u2019s job to protect my body and keep me healthy.
