Photo courtesy BC Centre for Disease Control.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Senior\u2019s care worker in Campbell River<\/h2>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/news\/news-releases\/island-health-declares-covid-19-outbreak-discovery-harbour-long-term-care-home-campbell-river\">press release from Island Health states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, no residents are experiencing symptoms. Communication with residents and families is underway.\u00a0Discovery Harbour is owned and operated by Park Place Seniors Living. The staff member who tested positive is self-isolating at home. The outbreak is limited to one neighbourhood within the facility. Photo courtesy of the BC Centre for Disease Control.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Masks mandatory in Campbell River<\/h2>\n<p>In response to the Province\u2019s November 19th public health order,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/city-of-campbell-river\/\">the city of Campbell River\u00a0<\/a>now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campbellriver.ca\/docs\/default-source\/news\/masks-now-required-in-city-facilities-new-safety-precautions-follow-provincial-health-orders-nov-2020.pdf?sfvrsn=7fd96908_0\">requires employees and visitors over two years old to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth in all public and common spaces within City facilities<\/a>. High intensity fitness activities, including Spin and Tabata, have been cancelled. No spectators are permitted at indoor or outdoor sporting events or practices. No outdoor or indoor social bookings or rentals are available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge everyone to do their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and appreciate people\u2019s patience and cooperation as we adjust our service levels to comply with evolving public health requirements,\u201d said City Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/deborah-sargent\/\">Deborah Sargent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>North Vancouver Island<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/Health-Info-Site\/PublishingImages\/health-info\/diseases-conditions\/covid-19\/case-counts-press-statements\/covid19_hsda_cumulative_14days_20201119.png\">The BC Centre for Disease Control reported<\/a> 20 new COVID-19 cases in North Vancouver Island in the two weeks between Nov. 6-19.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these people have already recovered because the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/covid-19\/documents\/public-health-covid19-daily-dashboard.pdf\">Island Health Dashboard<\/a>\u00a0only shows 12 active cases yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>North Vancouver Island is divided into four Health Areas: The Comox Valley; Greater Campbell River (which includes the Discovery Islands); Vancouver Island West and Vancouver Island North.<\/p>\n<h2>Central Vancouver Island<\/h2>\n<p>As of yesterday, there were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/covid-19\/documents\/public-health-covid19-daily-dashboard.pdf\">85 active cases in Central Vancouver island<\/a>. The vast majority were in private residences, whose locations are not made public,<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/news\/news-releases\/update-outbreak-tsawaayuus-rainbow-gardens-long-term-care-home-port-alberni\">second case was reported at Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens long-term care home in Port Albern<\/a>i. One of the staff members tested positive on Monday. Now one of the residents deemed to be a close contact has also\u00a0 tested positive.<\/p>\n<p>Island Health currently has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/learn-about-health\/covid-19\/exposures-schools\">six Central Vancouver Island schools listed on its exposure page<\/a>. Photo courtesy the BC Government.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are currently 128 active cases throughout\u00a0 Vancouver Island. As of 4:30 PM Friday, three of these have been hospitalized and one was admitted to intensive care. Close to three quarters of the island\u2019s residents infected, since the pandemic began, have now recovered.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is much more bleak province wide. As of 4:30 p.m. yesterday, there are 7,122 active cases, 227 people in hospital and 57 in tensive care.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/Health-Info-Site\/Documents\/COVID_sitrep\/BC_COVID-19_Situation_Report_Nov_20_2020.pdf\">British Columbia COVID-19 Situation Report<\/a> says that while the majority (55 per cent) of infected people are between 20 and 49 years old, about two-thirds of the deaths are associated with a care facility outbreak and 84 per cent (255) were people 70+ years old.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales There was a COVID-19 outbreak at the Discovery Harbour Care Centre\u00a0in\u00a0Campbell River, where a staff person tested positive on Thursday, Nov. 19.
