{"id":20775,"date":"2020-11-13T15:10:25","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T20:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=20775"},"modified":"2020-11-16T14:01:16","modified_gmt":"2020-11-16T19:01:16","slug":"covid-19-cases-6-more-in-campbell-river-during-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/covid-19-cases-6-more-in-campbell-river-during-october\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID 19 cases: 6 more in Campbell River during October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Roy L Hales<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2020HLTH0061-001935\">BC Health officials tell us<\/a>\u00a0the number of COVID 19 cases is doubling almost every 13 days.<\/p>\n<p>There were close to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/a6f23959a8b14bfa989e3cda29297ded\">5,800 active cases\u00a0<\/a>as of 4:30 PM, Thursday, November 12th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data shows us that the virus is able to transmit far more easily in the colder weather when we are spending more time indoors, which means that many of the things that we were able to do safely this summer are no longer safe,\u201d said Provincial Health Officer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2020HLTH0061-001935\">said Dr Bonnie Henry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_90690\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90690\" class=\"wp-image-90690\" src=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-13-at-7.56.20-AM-800x496.png\" alt=\"Campbell River\" width=\"800\" height=\"496\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of Campbell River \u2013 courtesy City of Campbell River 2019 Annual Report<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>October: in Campbell River Health Area<\/h2>\n<p>One of these COVID 19 cases was at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/only-two-new-cases-in-north-vancouver-island-last-week\/\">Carihi Secondary school\u00a0<\/a>and reported by the media. The others could have been anywhere in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/campbell-river\/\">Campbell River<\/a>, its outskirts, or the Discovery Islands.*<\/p>\n<p>These are not the first cases reported in the Campbell River Health area. There were a dozen earlier this year, but none in August or September.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_20777\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"dt-pswp-item\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-13-at-7.03.29-AM-e1605296918613.png\" data-dt-img-description=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20777\" class=\"wp-image-20777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-13-at-7.03.29-AM-e1605296918613.png\" alt=\"maps taken form the BC Centre for Disease Control\" width=\"800\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During October: There were 6 new cases in Campbell River; 8 in the Comox Valley, 1 in Vancouver Island North and no new cases reported in Powell River or Vancouver Island West \u2013 monthly maps taken form the BC Centre for Disease Control<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Recent COVID 19 cases: Vancouver Island<\/h2>\n<p>A less geographically specific\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccdc.ca\/Health-Info-Site\/PublishingImages\/health-info\/diseases-conditions\/covid-19\/case-counts-press-statements\/covid19_hsda_cumulative_14days_20201112.png\">report for the past two weeks<\/a>, states there were 18 new cases in North Vancouver Island, which includes the Comox Valley, Campbell and other regions to the north. Some of these people have already recovered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/covid-19\/documents\/public-health-covid19-daily-dashboard.pdf\">Island Health\u2019s Public Health COVID-19 Status Dashboard<\/a>\u00a0shows a total of 51 active cases, as of yesterday, and 11 of these are in North Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/a6f23959a8b14bfa989e3cda29297ded\">British Columbia\u2019s COVID-19 Dashboard<\/a>\u00a0confirms that there are 51 active cases on Vancouver Island. None of these have been hospitalized, admitted to the ICU and there has not been a new death reported in months.<\/p>\n<h2>Stay away from the Mainland<\/h2>\n<p>Ironically,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca\/vancouver-island-s-first-covid-19-outbreak-declared-at-nanaimo-regional-general-hospital-1.5185559\">Five staff members at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital<\/a>\u00a0tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Island Health\u2019s chief medical health officer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca\/nanaimo-hospital-covid-19-outbreak-may-have-come-from-lower-mainland-island-health-1.5186217\">Dr. Richard Stanwick, told CFAX\u00a0<\/a>1070 that a visitor from the Lower Mainland is believed to be the source. That\u2019s the biggest complaint I\u2019m hearing. Why is it that we can\u2019t have access to Vancouver Island which has far less issues with COVID and Vancouver has far more issues with COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added \u201cWe did have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/covid-update-for-september-16-2020\/\">breakout in the Tla\u2019amin Nation<\/a>. The Tla\u2019amin Nation did an excellent job of dealing with it and getting it under control. Most of the fatalities were among the elderly: \u201ctwo-thirds were associated with a care facility outbreak, and 85% were 70+ years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Henry explained, \u201c2% overall of people who have contracted COVID-19 have died, and we know that age is one of the most important factors in the probability that people will have severe illness or die from the virus.
