Low levels in the Nechako watershed make the waterbody more sensitive to temperature fluctuations, putting stress on the ecosystem, potentially increasing the likelihood of flooding due to <a href=\"https:\/\/scijinks.gov\/ice-jams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice-dams.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9ry doesn't mince words when pointing to the cause of this situation, \u201cDefinitely it is the lack of precipitation. We\u2019ve seen below average precipitation in Prince George since June 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/en\/operations\/canada\/bc-works\/nechako-reservoir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio Tinto owned Kinney Dam<\/a> upriver influences the watershed as well. It\u2019s conceivable that its <a href=\"https:\/\/visitburnslake.ca\/to-do\/skins-lake-spillway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skins Lake<\/a> spillway releases could help regulate river flow, achieving rates closer to average levels.
