{"id":198963,"date":"2023-11-29T17:53:04","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T22:53:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=198963"},"modified":"2023-11-29T17:53:04","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T22:53:04","slug":"halifax-first-2024-25-budget-meeting-looks-at-9-7-property-tax-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/halifax-first-2024-25-budget-meeting-looks-at-9-7-property-tax-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Halifax first 2024-25 budget meeting looks at 9.7% property tax increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halifax councillors debated the proposed 9.7 per cent tax hike this week at the first budget meeting for the 2024-25 fiscal season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The property tax increase would make up for a revenue shortfall of $68.7 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Tuesday's meeting, HRM councillors debated the motion put forward by city staff to raise property taxes by 9.7 per cent, brought down from the original 15 per cent increase. The increase would mean the average homeowners would pay around $223 more on their annual bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayor Mike Savage suggested the province should step in and help the municipality in order to lessen the amount coming from homeowners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The province] got more in growth then we\u2019ve spent the whole year,\u201d Savage said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more people coming to the province and due to inflation the province is receiving more income tax, the mayor said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo one wants nearly 10 per cent, it's not palatable to anyone,\u201d Coun. Sam Austin said, b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ut added that the city has its hands tied with making alternative cuts. \u201cGo back to twice a week green bin pick-up in the summer?\u201d Austin said. \u201cThat one\u2019s always a winner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coun. Tony Mancini said he\u2019s concerned about the property tax forcing seniors out of their homes or tenants being hit with higher rent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t support 9.7 and I told my residents already I don\u2019t support that,\u201d Mancini said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next budget meeting will take place Dec. 12 with a capital update.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Halifax councillors debated the proposed 9.7 per cent tax hike this week at the first budget meeting for the 2024-25 fiscal season.
