{"id":197949,"date":"2023-11-27T16:06:08","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T21:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=197949"},"modified":"2023-11-27T16:06:08","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T21:06:08","slug":"nelsons-living-wage-increases-to-21-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/nelsons-living-wage-increases-to-21-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Nelson&#8217;s living wage increases to $21.14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/policyalternatives.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives<\/a> annual <a href=\"https:\/\/policyalternatives.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/publications\/2023\/11\/ccpa-bc-Working-for-a-Living-Wage-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Living Wage Report<\/a>, the hourly rate that people need to earn in Nelson has risen to $21.14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living wage is the hourly rate that each of two parents working full-time needs to earn in order to support a family of four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a 1.5% increase from last year. All of the 19 communities surveyed in British Columbia saw an increase this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sean Ryan, the Nelson representative for the report said, \u201cthe past few years' <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">living wage in BC has increased dramatically. Rents have skyrocketed and the cost of groceries have soared across the province.\u201d He spoke to CJLY about this year's living wage report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan explained the two main reasons for the study. One is for the government to understand the gap between living wage and minimum wage. The other is to encourage employers to become living wage employers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimum wage in BC is $16.75 per hour, the second highest rate in the country. This is below the living wage in all 19 communities surveyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livingwageforfamilies.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Living Wage for Families BC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livingwageforfamilies.ca\/nelson_living_wage_employers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seven employers<\/a> in Nelson are living wage employers.
