{"id":194441,"date":"2023-11-16T10:52:44","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T15:52:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=194441"},"modified":"2023-11-16T11:13:41","modified_gmt":"2023-11-16T16:13:41","slug":"indigenous-film-director-takes-a-different-approach-to-residential-school-film-and-gets-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/indigenous-film-director-takes-a-different-approach-to-residential-school-film-and-gets-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous director sees success with his different approach to storytelling about residential school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A film with ties to Six Nations is now being nominated for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciff.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chilliwack Independent Film Festival<\/a> \"Spirit Award\" &amp; \"Best Cinematography\" and will also screen this November 18th at the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival.\u00a0 It was screened at the 2 Ro Media Festival at Six Nations on October 22, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The film, called \"Little Deer\",\u00a0 is based on several stories from residential school survivors and was filmed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohawk_Institute_Residential_School\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mohawk Institute Residential School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CKRZ News journalist Deya Miller sat down with Indigenous film director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm6481080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Elliot<\/a> of Six Nations where they spoke about the process of\u00a0 making the film.<\/p>\n<p>Elliott spoke about how a project like Little Deer did have some hurdles to overcome when it came to funding the project by saying he knew how other films have done it in the past.
