{"id":191496,"date":"2023-11-01T19:47:18","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T23:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=191496"},"modified":"2023-11-01T19:47:18","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T23:47:18","slug":"kootenay-lake-region-to-have-54-bear-safe-containers-installed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/kootenay-lake-region-to-have-54-bear-safe-containers-installed\/","title":{"rendered":"Kootenay Lake region to have 54 bear safe containers installed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nelsonkootenaylake.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism Society<\/a> will receive $287,500 in funding to install 54 bear safe garbage containers throughout the region. <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/nelson-castlegar-ranked-among-the-deadliest-cities-for-black-bears-in-bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black bears<\/a> and grizzly bears have consistently caused issues in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The funding is being provided <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">through the provincial government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/tourism-immigration\/tourism-resources\/tourism-funding-programs\/destination-development-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Destination Development Fund<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe worked with the local conservation officers, <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsafebc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wildsafe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theursaproject.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">URSA Project<\/a> to find the spaces that needed the bins the most,\u201d Renee Letorneau from the Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism Society says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The containers will be placed from North Kaslo to the outskirts of Nelson. Areas commonly visited by tourists like campgrounds and trailheads are the focus of this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CJLY also spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.bc.ca\/learn-about-us\/members\/42nd-Parliament\/anderson-brittny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brittny Anderson<\/a>, the MLA for Nelson Creston.
