{"id":191387,"date":"2023-11-02T13:08:24","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T17:08:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=191387"},"modified":"2023-11-02T13:08:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T17:08:24","slug":"provincial-ndp-ask-houston-government-to-cut-grocery-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/provincial-ndp-ask-houston-government-to-cut-grocery-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Provincial NDP ask Houston government to cut grocery tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Nova Scotia NDP are asking Premier Tim Houston to cut grocery tax on all food items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NDP leader Claudia Chender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qCSuWvoHFYY\">tabled legislation<\/a> on Tuesday in an effort to cut the grocery tax to help Nova Scotians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chender asked for amendments to be made to Chapter 31 of the Acts of 1996, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nslegislature.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/legc\/statutes\/sales%20tax.pdf\">Sales Tax Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/finance\/statistics\/topic.asp?fto=21u#:~:text=Food%20price%20inflation%20was%206.2,6.8%25%20gain%20reported%20in%20August.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Food prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from September 2022 to September 2023 were up 6.2 per cent in Nova Scotia compared to the national food price increase which was 5.9 per cent. Some food items that saw the highest inflation year-over-year were chicken, beef, fats and oils and non-alcoholic beverages. Chicken saw the fastest inflation with a rise of 17.4 per cent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe basics in our grocery stores aren't taxed, but there are an awful lot of things that are,\u201d Chender says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But things like prepared foods still have sales tax. Chender says people working long shifts or seniors may opt for these food items that are taxed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMany of the items that might have been un-taxable as groceries are becoming taxed as the portion sizes get smaller, and the prices rise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/poverty-index\/2023-nova-scotia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from Food Bank Canada gave Nova Scotia an overall grade of an \"F\" when looking at several categories. Food Insecurity Rate received an \"F\" due to contributing factors such as lack of jobs and high social assistance in the province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a skyrocketing food bank use,\u201d Chender says. \u201cAlmost everywhere the need is actually unmanageable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NDP says removing HST from all food items is a step to helping people afford to get by.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat this will do is help people who are right on the edge, live with a little more dignity, and be able to eat three meals a day,\u201d Chender says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NDP is also looking to cut PharmaCare fees for seniors and families. \u201cPeople are choosing between food and medicine,\u201d Chender says. \u201cThat\u2019s an impossible choice that no one should have to make.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nova Scotia NDP are asking Premier Tim Houston to cut grocery tax on all food items.
