They left their meal on the bank. The head of a salmon had been pecked off. Photo by Roy L Hales.<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>At the mouth of Basil Creek<\/h2>\n<p>There were at least a dozen salmon swimming nearby and others waiting to enter the creek. They scattered when approached. One or two fled back to open waters, reminding me not to proceed further. I photographed some of the salmon waiting around the next bend, then retreated.<\/p>\n<p>There is a second look-out, where visitors can stop without intruding on private property. There were between three and four dozen upstream at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/basil-creek-culvert\/\">Basil Creek\u2019s new culvert<\/a>. Photo by Roy L Hales.<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Previous years<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/chum-returns-on-cortes-quadra\/\">Last year\u2019s run was disappointing<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cec-robinson\/\">Cec Robinson<\/a>\u00a0told Cortes Currents there were perhaps 50 on the whole of Cortes Island, but there had been close to 1,300 in 2016. Photo by Roy L Hales.<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>October 17 count<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show13247a\/The_Return_of_the_2020_Chum\">The Tideline carries Christine Robinson\u2019s report<\/a> of a survey of Basil Creek made two weeks ago, on Oct.17. A party of young streamkeepers from Cortes School broke into four groups, each of which made its own tally. One group counted 197 Chum: 110 females and 87 males. The aggregate count varied widely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Live fish \u2013 numbers between 80 and 286<\/li>\n<li>Dead \u2013 numbers between 8 and 28<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The students counted between 12 and 40 predators. Photo by Roy L Hales.<\/p><\/div><figcaption>A crow stayed behind to watch \u2013 Roy L Hales photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>James, Hansen and Whaletown Creeks<\/h2>\n<p>There are three more salmon bearing creeks on Cortes Island.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/james-creek\/\">James Creek<\/a>\u00a0runs through the Children\u2019s Forest into Carrington Lagoon.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/hansens-creek\/\">Hansen Creek<\/a>\u00a0empties into the Gorge Harbour.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/basil-creek-restoration-project\/\">Whaletown Creek<\/a>\u00a0runs through the other new culvert into Whaletown Lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of Cortes Island Streamkeepers will continue to monitor and count spawners from mid-October through November.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_90381\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90381\" class=\"wp-image-90381\" src=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_1663.jpg\" alt=\"Chum waiting to enter the creek \" width=\"504\" height=\"366\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The fin of a Chum salmon, waiting to enter Basil Creek, breaks the surface.
