{"id":184063,"date":"2023-09-30T02:03:38","date_gmt":"2023-09-30T06:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=184063"},"modified":"2023-09-30T02:03:38","modified_gmt":"2023-09-30T06:03:38","slug":"protesters-against-logging-of-old-growth-forests-picket-ndp-mla-offices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/protesters-against-logging-of-old-growth-forests-picket-ndp-mla-offices\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters against logging of old growth forests picket NDP MLA offices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Protests against the logging of old growth forests took place Thursday across British Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">David Quigg, an o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rganizer with the Sierra Club, was outside NDP <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MLA Sheila Malcomson\u2019s office in downtown Nanaimo marking the three-year anniversary of the provinces\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/farming-natural-resources-and-industry\/forestry\/stewardship\/old-growth-forests\/strategic-review-20200430.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Old Growth Strategic Review. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Malcomson\u2019s office was one of a dozen NDP MLA offices targeted by protesters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat was a huge paradigm shifting document that the BC government created saying we are going to do forestry differently in this province and there was a lot of excitement about it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut they have not implemented any of those 14 recommendations. In fact, there's still more talk and log, 150 soccer fields worth of old growth are logged every single day.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a written statement Minister of Forests Bruce Ralston says that the province is working to protect B.C.\u2019s old growth forests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople in B.C. care deeply about our forests \u2013 we understand their passion and respect their right to peaceful protest,\u201d said Ralston. \u201cWe also share their desire to protect old growth forests. That\u2019s why we are taking transformational action to protect old growth in partnership with First Nations rights and title holders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ministry of Forests says that the province has worked with 240 First Nations and as of August logging has been deferred on 2.25 million hectares of old growth forests, including 1.2 million hectares of the most at-risk old growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quigg says those deferrals aren\u2019t enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat deferral means is hitting the pause button, but they have not kept up that promise to actually pause the logging,\u201d said Quigg. \u201cIn fact, Stand.Earth created this tool called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stand.earth\/forest-eye\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forest Eye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that you can find online, where you can see active logging, road building and logging happening in the different areas.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ministry says that it has also doubled the amount of forest revenues shared with First Nations as a step towards a new fiscal forestry framework under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/governments\/indigenous-people\/new-relationship\/united-nations-declaration-on-the-rights-of-indigenous-peoples\/implementation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Declaration Act Action Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to this, the government is working with First Nations to provide Guardian Stewardship training and amend forestry laws to include shared decision-making and supporting First Nations to co-develop forestry policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quigg says he would rather that the government provide First Nations with money to preserve old-growth forests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor indigenous nations to have viable alternatives, they need to put food on the table just like other communities, they need funding to transition to tourism economies to carbon sequestration economies, other finance mechanisms to to allow for more forest protection,\u201d Quigg said.,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ministry of Forests says that the $180 million<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/employment-business\/economic-development\/support-organizations-community-partners\/rural-economic-development\/manufacturing-jobs-fund\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will help mills retrofit to get off old-growth logs and manufacture more high-value wood products, creating good jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quigg agrees that forestry practices need to change to provide sustainable forestry jobs for communities that rely on them and points to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoforestry.ca\/wildwood-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildwood Ecoforest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> just south of the city as one example of sustainable forestry practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe forest yield in a managed forest is actually greater than a clear cut over the same amount of time,\u201d said Quigg. \u201cYou can walk through Wildwood and you're basically standing in what feels like an old growth forest, even though that's a productive forest operation that's yielded tons of timber.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quigg says there is no time to lose if people want to stop old growth logging.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our ecosystems are collapsing,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are essential services like clean water, clean air, biodiversity, we can't live without these things. So we\u2019ve got to stop killing them.
