{"id":183345,"date":"2023-09-28T18:41:31","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T22:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=183345"},"modified":"2023-09-28T18:41:31","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T22:41:31","slug":"new-greenhouse-crop-prevails-for-local-farmer-despite-climate-change-impacts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/new-greenhouse-crop-prevails-for-local-farmer-despite-climate-change-impacts\/","title":{"rendered":"New greenhouse crop prevails for local farmer despite climate change impacts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wildflower Produce had its first successful year of ginger crop make it to market this month on the island. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the second time local farmer Sara Stewart has grown the crop, but last year's abnormally wet spring posed challenges.\u00a0<\/span>Even growing in a greenhouse didn't protect the farmer's crop.<\/p>\n<p>\"Last year, the ginger didn't do well because even though it was in a greenhouse in the exact same conditions, we had an unusually cool, wet long spring,\" Stewart said, saddened. \"We had 'June-uary' for six months, it was like completely demoralizing.\"<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to climate change, Stewart notes that the mental health of farmers continues to decline and has become a serious issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn Canada, the suicide rate for farmers is three and a half times the national average. So having things like climate change on top of something that's already stressful is very challenging,\u201d Stewart said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Canadian organizations are acknowledging this issue by offering services through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agsafebc.ca\/mental-wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agsafe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccaw.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Canadian Centre for Wellbeing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Stewart has utilized these resources, and encourages other market farmers to seek it out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With some optimism, Stewart will continue to expand her growing in greenhouses as she utilizes the infrastructure year round now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf things were unlimited, I would have 10 greenhouses.
