{"id":181448,"date":"2023-09-22T14:08:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T18:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=181448"},"modified":"2023-09-22T14:08:30","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T18:08:30","slug":"board-of-police-commissioners-welcomes-new-acting-chief-talks-future-police-headquarters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/board-of-police-commissioners-welcomes-new-acting-chief-talks-future-police-headquarters\/","title":{"rendered":"Board of Police Commissioners welcomes new acting chief, talks future police headquarters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Board of Police Commissioners welcomed new acting police Chief Don MacLean during Wednesday evening's meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MacLean was appointed as acting police chief last Tuesday following <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/halifax-regional-police-chief-announces-retirement-starting-next-week\/?preview_id=177855&amp;preview_nonce=0b9190a946&amp;_thumbnail_id=177862&amp;preview=true\">Chief Dan Kinsella's recent announcement of his retirement.<\/a> His new role as Halifax\u2019s interim police chief started on Sept. 16 and will run until a new chief is selected this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the meeting, MacLean said he has received \u201coverwhelmingly positive\u201d messages: he has served for the Halifax Regional Police (HRP) for the past 30 years and is the first Black police chief in the force\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MacLean also announced that Deputy Chief Reid McCoombs will be starting Oct. 3 and acting temporarily as deputy for MacLean. McCoombs worked for HRP for 34 years before retiring in July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe brings 34 years of experience, wisdom and leadership,\u201d MacLean said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The meeting also focused discussions around the roughly $100 million budgeted for a new headquarters outlined in the 2024-2025 capital plan.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crystal Nowlan, director of asset management, said the budget is still a draft until it goes before the regional council for approval.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFacilities, equipment and vehicles are the main source,\u201d Nowlan said, mentioning that information technology (IT) is a big part of the budget plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cathie O\u2019Toole, the municipality\u2019s chief administrative officer, mentioned that safety inspection budgeting needs to be considered for the existing police headquarters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want to make sure that from an occupational and fire safety perspective that we are budgeting for whatever recap we need to do,\u201d O\u2019Toole said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Location for the new headquarters has still yet to be finalized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think we have an interesting opportunity here,\u201d Coun.
