{"id":181232,"date":"2023-09-21T15:23:06","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T19:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=181232"},"modified":"2023-09-21T15:29:08","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T19:29:08","slug":"take-back-the-night-celebrates-40-years-in-waterloo-region-and-puts-the-spotlight-on-personal-safety-at-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/take-back-the-night-celebrates-40-years-in-waterloo-region-and-puts-the-spotlight-on-personal-safety-at-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Take Back the Night celebrates 40 years in Waterloo Region, puts the spotlight on personal safety at night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region is hosting the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sascwr.org\/tbtn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Take Back the Night event and march<\/a><\/span> this Thursday September 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The event and march hopes to raise awareness of the threat of sexual violence and comes in the wake of the city of Kitchener and the Region of Waterloo declaring epidemics of intimate partner violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A few weeks ago, CKMS aired a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/the-city-of-kitchener-ontario-declares-an-epidemic-of-intimate-partner-violence-in-the-area\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">show\u00a0on Intimate Partner Violence<\/span><\/a> and explained how this Region stands out in cross-Canada data as the least safe place for women to live in all of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From 2008 to 2019, the Waterloo Region sexual assault incidence rate has been higher than the provincial average, and that rate and numbers it represents continue to increase. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thefeministshift.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Data-For-Good-Full-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This report from The Feminist Shift<\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">elaborates on those findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/85-002-x\/2020001\/article\/00001\/kitchener-cambridge-waterloo-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statistics Canada reported that in 2018<\/a>, just over one in five (22%) Kitchener\u2013Cambridge\u2013Waterloo residents aged 15 and older experienced unwanted sexual behaviour in public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many research studies have found that in the vast majority of sexual assaults, the accused is known to the victim. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">According to a<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/rp-pr\/csj-sjc\/ccs-ajc\/rr06_vic2\/p3_4.html#:~:text=Two%20fifths%20of%20all%20victims,committed%20by%20friends%20and%20acquaintances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a>,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;\">only 20% were <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">victimized by a stranger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, sexual assaults are considered significantly underreported to the police.<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> Results from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/85-002-x\/2021001\/article\/00014-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 General Social Survey on Victimization<\/a> show that only 6% of sexual assault experienced by Canadians aged 15 and older were reported to the police.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is commonly acknowledged that sexual assaults are seriously underreported, often committed by someone the victim knows, and that these assaults continue to increase. Contradicting these statistics were the conversations CKMS news had with locals on the street, who said they felt safe at night. Statistics on perception of safety are also available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2020, the Statistics Canada<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/85-002-x\/2020001\/article\/00001\/kitchener-cambridge-waterloo-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Safe Cities Profile<\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">for Kitchener Cambridge Waterloo reported that 42% of women in the region felt very safe when walking alone after dark, while 63% of men felt very safe walking at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Over three quarters of Regional residents thought crime levels in their neighbourhood were lower than the rest of Canada, however the Crime Severity Index tell a different tale. The Crime Severity Index is defined by Stats Can as changes in the severity of police-reported crime by accounting for both the amount of crime and the relative seriousness of these crimes. So while three-quarters of Regional residents thought their communities had lower crime levels than the rest of the country,<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/en\/daily-quotidien\/230727\/dq230727b-eng.pdf?st=Op0fvFT2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crime Severity Index for Waterloo Region in 2022<\/a> <span style=\"color: #333333;\">was higher than the national average and third highest in the province behind Thunder Bay and Sudbury.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There may be a discrepancy between our perceptions and reality, but respondents to our street survey noted increased lighting on the streets and trails, safer transit, and staying closer to built up areas all contribute to the perception of safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Take back the Night happens at the Gaukel Block from 6-9 on Thursday September 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Listen to today's show with Karley Doucette of the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region and hits the streets to ask people if they feel safe walking in their community at night.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region is hosting the 40th anniversary of the Take Back the Night event and march this Thursday September 21.
