{"id":181140,"date":"2023-09-20T17:13:13","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T21:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=181140"},"modified":"2023-09-20T17:13:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T21:13:13","slug":"community-group-hosting-town-hall-on-quebecs-energy-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/community-group-hosting-town-hall-on-quebecs-energy-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Community group hosting town hall on Quebec&#8217;s energy future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acefnord.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACEF du Nord<\/a> is hosting a public assembly on Quebec\u2019s energy transition and energy affordability in the province this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With legislation slated for later this fall, organizers fear that the province will use individual consumption rates to incentivize lower energy use \u2060\u2014 in effect raising energy costs for households already dealing with a cost-of-living crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon and Premier Francois Legault have discussed plans to incentivize clean and efficient energy use from businesses in the province. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledevoir.com\/politique\/quebec\/790396\/fitzgibbon-revient-a-la-charge-avec-la-sobriete-energetique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">But the Minister now says the bill will likely touch on personal consumption too.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That legislation is already under fire: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an <a href=\"https:\/\/scfp.qc.ca\/consultation-sur-lavenir-energetique-du-quebec-tres-loin-du-debat-de-societe-promis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open letter<\/a> signed by 32 environmental, labour and citizens groups in the province argued that a just transition deserves a citizens' consultation process. Instead, the ministry held an online call for comments this past June and July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-news\/bill-limiting-hydro-quebec-residential-rate-hike-to-3-passes-national-assembly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Coalition Avenir Quebec government has capped hydro increases at three percent<\/a>\u00a0after previously tying them to the rate of inflation. But ACEF du Nord's Isabelle Mailloux-B\u00e9\u00efque says they need to do more to keep energy affordable in the province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\"We would like the government to respect the first mission of Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec, which was to provide low cost electricity to all Quebecers.\"<\/p>\n<p>The town hall takes place this Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 6-9 p.m., with food at 5:30, at 7595 Boul.
