{"id":179833,"date":"2023-09-15T16:49:32","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T20:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=179833"},"modified":"2023-09-15T16:49:32","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T20:49:32","slug":"housing-crisis-sees-students-in-dire-straits-concordia-housing-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/housing-crisis-sees-students-in-dire-straits-concordia-housing-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing crisis sees students in dire straits: Concordia housing centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the fall term gets underway, the Concordia Student Union\u2019s Off Campus Housing &amp; Job Resource Centre (HOJO) is seeing more students with housing troubles than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HOJO Manager Leanne Ashworth says with stiff competition for rental units, students are being asked to provide more and more personal information, and sometimes deposits, before ever stepping foot in apartments. Fraud is becoming a serious problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think because of the knowledge out there that there is a housing crisis, a lot of different actors are posting false ads online.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are also contending with a genuine housing shortage: even if they raise their budgets, Ashworth says, they still may struggle to find a home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s just literally not enough places for people to stay, so no amount of money can really increase that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s not just HOJO noticing the shift \u2013 Jeffrey Carter says he and his girlfriend have rented out extra rooms in their apartment for years. During the pandemic, they moved into a condo, but kept subletting their old place and keeping a small profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He says the price they charge per room hasn\u2019t changed in that time, but its value on Montreal\u2019s hot housing market has.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe number of people that contact me to rent a room has just exploded, especially in the last two years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt used to take us days, maybe weeks to find someone\u2026 now we could put it up the day of and someone would come to us within an hour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Universities often have emergency spots in residence for students whose housing falls through, but they\u2019re typically limited in number and available for only for a short period of time. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faced with growing demand, HOJO is piloting a program offering students transitional housing and part-time work so they don\u2019t end up homeless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor these students, it\u2019s just something they have to try to work through,\u201d says Ashworth. \u201cBut it\u2019s extremely challenging and it\u2019s hard for them to understand why this is happening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the fall term gets underway, the Concordia Student Union\u2019s Off Campus Housing &amp; Job Resource Centre (HOJO) is seeing more students with housing troubles than ever.
