{"id":179670,"date":"2023-09-14T16:22:49","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T20:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=179670"},"modified":"2023-09-15T11:08:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T15:08:03","slug":"province-must-follow-through-on-paid-internships-opposition-parties-unions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/province-must-follow-through-on-paid-internships-opposition-parties-unions\/","title":{"rendered":"Province must follow through on paid internships: opposition parties, unions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Opposition parties and student unions renewed calls for paid internships in Quebec at a press conference on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Critics on youth and higher education from the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois, Qu\u00e9bec Solidaire and the Quebec Liberals, as well as the heads of the Union \u00e9tudiante du Qu\u00e9bec and the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration \u00e9tudiante coll\u00e9giale du Qu\u00e9bec, reminded the Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec government of their commitment to pay public sector interns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1967342\/greve-remuneration-stages-etudiants-uqar-entente-cours-?depuisRecherche=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the National Assembly voted unanimously in favour of Pascal B\u00e9rub\u00e9\u2019s motion<\/a> to that effect. B\u00e9rub\u00e9, the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois spokesperson on higher education, expressed disappointment at the province\u2019s silence in the months following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe government said 'yes' to this motion and we legitimately expected, for the start of the school year, an announcement, something new, a real recognition. That hasn't happened yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Representatives from both student unions maintained they want all internships in the province to be paid, particularly those approved by the government for professional training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When questioned, B\u00e9rub\u00e9 said the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois was also in favour, though that falls outside the confines of his motion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Madwa-Nika Cadet, the Liberal spokesperson for youth and employment, argued it makes sense to pay public sector interns as the province undergoes a labour shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span>What we do when we push them away from these programs, we create a situation where the labour shortage is even more important in the public sector in particular, where the population needs services.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Opposition parties and student unions renewed calls for paid internships in Quebec at a press conference on Wednesday.
