{"id":179333,"date":"2023-09-13T19:47:26","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T23:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=179333"},"modified":"2023-09-14T16:02:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T20:02:45","slug":"verdun-rallies-against-renovictions-at-community-barbecue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/verdun-rallies-against-renovictions-at-community-barbecue\/","title":{"rendered":"Verdun rallies against renovictions at community barbecue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The housing crisis was top of mind at an anti-renoviction barbecue in Verdun last Friday (Sept 8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The event was hosted by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Comit\u00e9 d'action des citoyen.ne.s de Verdun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (CACV) behind their offices on Verdun Avenue. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organizers and community members took the mic to share their experiences of rising rents, political inaction, and hostile landlords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking to CKUT, the CACV\u2019s Lyn O\u2019Donnell argued that rising property values gives landlords the incentive to turf long-term tenants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Renovictions, in which a landlord evicts a tenant to conduct major repairs, are seen throughout the city. Even though tenants have the right to return, this often isn\u2019t observed in practice, O\u2019Donnell said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Verdun, however, they\u2019re also seeing tenants kicked out when landlords subdivide or fuse together existing apartments. These evictions are permanent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNow when \u2026 landlords want to make these renovations, they\u2019re kicking someone out who has nowhere else to go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CACV would like to see local government do more on this file. That\u2019s why they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cacv-verdun.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/M%C3%A9moire-moratoire-permis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">calling for a moratorium on permits that would lead to evictions.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For single mom M\u00e9lissa Simard, who spoke at Friday\u2019s barbecue, the fight against evictions is personal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She said that when she fought for necessary repairs to her unit, her landlord responded by trying to evict her, and keeps taking cases to the housing tribunal (TAL) in the hopes of getting a favourable judge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Simard has lobbied local politicians, but to no avail: she says the solidarity she\u2019s found in groups like the CACV has helped her keep fighting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it\u2019s totally discouraging\u2026 The individual is the one that has to navigate those systems.
