{"id":179331,"date":"2023-09-14T20:45:41","date_gmt":"2023-09-15T00:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=179331"},"modified":"2023-09-14T20:45:41","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T00:45:41","slug":"gender-diversity-workshop-sees-limited-attendance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/gender-diversity-workshop-sees-limited-attendance\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender diversity workshop sees limited attendance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A gender diversity workshop at Mansons Hall on Cortes last week was the first of its kind, but an organizer said the attendance was low.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was a little surprised at how it wasn't better attended than it was, because I would think that anybody, aside from interest in supporting gender diversity\u2026 and decolonization, anyone who wants to work with the public in any capacity probably should have some kind of training in gender diversity,\u201d Facilitator Connie Quayle noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The public event was funded by the Cortes Community Foundation through a microgrant and was free to attend. Quayle offered a similar, private workshop for Hollyhock employees earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quayle, a BC certified teacher, said that those that attended the public workshop, participated in a lively discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI love how sometimes the folks on this island can get so inspired and so curious and really do sink their teeth into topics when presented with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quayle described one of the reasons <a href=\"https:\/\/l.facebook.com\/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.phsa.ca%2Ftranscarebc%2Fgender-basics-education%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR22G82P7r06_7c-oW55D4JKfqb1aukHIUIPYAISnqIPa8Pa1ghv9kyE8Ow&amp;h=AT0s5e1817xhgKbQmsxxzR3NJYQan136huLkh_rWp-8xiGxWczf9wHvGrwSAOCQIHjsVSTaUhPNkxgTvITrqbFE5j_C8Qgkj7rCLCHlMscHVdymKkQnmpHd5iY2bORvm9g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender diversity<\/a> is more and more visible in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI've had my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/cbcdocspov\/features\/canadas-gender-identity-rights-bill-c-16-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">human rights as a trans person protected in BC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> now since 2016. A few years now,\" Quayle said. \"And so more of us are coming out because we have our human rights protected for the first time ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Quayle has reached out to the Cortes Community Health Association (CCHA) and the Cortes Island School to offer her educational services in gender diversity. The educator hopes more businesses, schools, non-profits and families, will connect with her when seeking out local resources on gender diversity.
